Hey, educators! 🍎 📚 Discover the world of freshwater mussels through the lenses of history, science, and culture in your classroom. The new digital booklet explores mussel anatomy, life cycles, habitat, threats to freshwater mussel survival, and efforts to preserve them.

Freshwater mussels are a hot topic in West Michigan this fall with a massive relocation project underway in the Grand River. For The City of Grand Rapids to begin restoring the namesake whitewater rapids, endangered species of freshwater mussels must be moved to safety, and divers are currently hard at work collecting them.

Throughout the activity guide, background information is provided through easy-to-understand language, diagrams, and photographs. Opportunities to reflect, sketch, and learn more will keep students engaged as they consider the differences between native and invasive species, make connections, and brainstorm their own ideas to protect these endangered freshwater mussels!

Ready for an update on the Mussel movement?

Check this -> Members of our team were walking around the river today. They stopped and spoke with the crew in the tent keeping count...and guess what?

They estimated that they're about 50% thru the job. Moving right along!

We also talked to Michael Staal, the lead engineer on the project and he said, "River flows are low. Weather is nice. We have 6 crews on site. This is a significant undertaking that is going really well.
As of yesterday, the total count of mussels relocated is 5,724." 🤯

Happening next Saturday!

Be a part of a massive group of local volunteers as we all work together to help clean up the river!

Beginning with our Cleanup Kickoff Day on Saturday, September 7th and continuing with individual cleanups through September 14th, a collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers will be working alongside WMEAC to tackle the task of removing trash along the Grand River and its surrounding streams. This initiative showcases the power of community involvement in preserving our natural environment. Let's make a positive impact together!
