Picture this: a room full of fluffy pancakes, great company, and a whole community coming together for the pets we adore. πŸ’›

Tomorrow is GRPBAs first date October BISSELL Pet Foundation Fix the Future Spay and Neuter clinics.

Our team was busy today putting airline crates together, making reminder phone calls to families and filling out paperwork.

Tomorrow volunteers will arrive at the GRPBA Pet Support Center at 6:30 and families will begin arriving at 7:00am to check in and drop off their pets for us to transport to the Bissell Pet Foundation Clinic.

It takes a lot of volunteers to make this happen and we are extremely grateful for everyone who volunteers for Fix the Future!

We look forward to tomorrow where several pets from the community will be spayed / neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and most importantly live longer healthier lives and no longer reproducing.

Thank you Bissell Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell for Fix the Future and eliminating barriers to spay and neuter for community pets! πŸ™πŸΎ

Learning today so we can serve better tomorrow 🐾

Part of our team from Grand Rapids Pit Bull Alliance attended the Michigan Pet Alliance Next Level Animal Welfare Conference in Macomb County this past weekend!

Conferences like this let those of us in animal welfare keep growing in sheltering, rescue, outreach, and always in how we serve people and pets. They give us the chance to learn from our peers, build collaborative relationships, and come home with fresh ideas to help animals and the people who love them.

We were glad to attend alongside our friends from West Michigan animal welfare organizations:

🐾 Harbor Humane Society
🐾 Humane Society of West Michigan
🐾 Kent County Animal Shelter

We also had the pleasure of spending time with friends from organizations on the east side of the state, including our mentors at Dog Aide , who took home a well-deserved award for Innovation in Animal Welfare! πŸ† Congratulations, and thank you for all you do for pets and pets and teaching and welcoming us 🫢🏿

Ongoing education isn't optional in animal welfare. We're not doing things the way they were done 30 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago, because we keep learning to do better. We can't simply say

"this is the way we've always done it" or "I've been doing this for years."

New ideas, ongoing education, conversations, and open-minded collaboration are how we keep pets in their homes, increase adoptions, retain adoptions, reunite lost pets with their families, and reduce the stress of the shelter and of transitions in a pet's life. We get there by learning from others, knowing we're all here for the same reason: to help animals and people.

Some of our shared goals:

βœ… Decrease the amount of animals entering the shelter system
βœ… Keeping pets in their homes
βœ… Preserve the human-animal bond
βœ… Increase adoptions
βœ… Strengthen Animal Control Laws
βœ… RTH (Return to Home)
βœ… TNR (Trap Neuter Return)
βœ… Decrease the stress on animals in the shelter

Just some of the conference highlights:
πŸ• Programs that help keep pets with their families
πŸ• Using dog adoption data to increase adoptions
πŸ• Running safe play groups in shelters
πŸ• Reducing shelter noise to lower stress for animals
πŸ• Low stress handling of dogs
🐾 Unique and out of the box ways to get adoptable pets seen
πŸˆβ€β¬› Developing a TNR Community Cat Program
πŸˆβ€β¬› Feline Behavior
πŸˆβ€β¬› Neonatal Kitten Care
🐾 And so much more!

To our friends in animal welfare, whether you're a shelter tech, volunteer dog walker, rescue foster, or a board member of a rescue, outreach organization, or shelter: keep learning and keep learning from each other. Together we can serve pets and people better and keep developing more progressive ways to help. ❀️

🐾 Grand Rapids Pit Bull Alliance October & November Pet Food Bank Schedule.

Check out the graphic below for all the dates and times for October and November!

A quick reminder: each pet family can visit one distribution per month. This helps us stretch our resources so we can support as many pets in the community as possible.

If money's tight and it's affecting your ability to feed your pet, please reach out. This is exactly what we're here for, and you don't have to face it alone.

Ongoing assistance requirements:
To continue receiving monthly food support, pet families need to:
β€’ provide proof of spay/neuter OR if your pet is intact have the pet spayed and neutered (either through GRPBA or a another veterinary clinic on your own)
β€’ complete application for assistance
β€’ indicate hardship

🐾 We also help with spay/neuter!
GRPBA has limited spay and neuter assistance for pets each month. Spots fill up fast!

A little about our weeknight option: we added a second distribution day each month after hearing from pet parents that weekends and daytime hours don't always work. Between Saturday shifts and 5-6 PM job releases, we wanted a schedule that actually fits real life. The more you use this extra time slot, the more we can justify keeping it and someday, we'd love to offer weekly distributions. Getting there depends on having enough volunteer support, though!

Want to help make that happen? If you can spare a few hours on a distribution day, we'd love to have you. Email us to join the volunteer team:
[email protected]

Thanks for helping us spread the word to anyone who could use support. 🐾
Our Pet Support Center is located at:
πŸ“ 1676 Viewpond Dr SE, Kentwood, MI
(Remember we are volunteer run and by appointment only)

TEENY HAS BEEN ADOPTED πŸ’•

On Thursday, Teeny's guardian reached out with news we'd been hoping for: a family wanted to meet her. This family had lost the last of their Pitty pups 2.5 years ago, and they were finally ready to add a pup to their family.

They came to meet Teeny, and it was a perfect match. πŸ₯Ή There were lots of hugs and happy tears from everyone, including Teeny's guardian, who has been invited to visit and stay in Teeny's life.

Teeny never had to set foot in a shelter. She went from one loving home straight to another, and that's the power of direct rehoming. 🐾 Pets skip the stress of shelter life, which can be loud, scary, and confusing, and they only have to go through one transition instead of multiple. Guardians/families know exactly where their pet is going and can stay in touch, while adopters get insight from those who know the pets best. Direct Rehoming leaves shelter space and resources available for animals who have nowhere else to go such as strays and cruelty and neglect situations.

Teeny's guardian made a loving choice, and our community helped in a big way. Thank you to Teeny's guardians, to Harbor Humane, and to every one of you who shared her story. You helped bring two families together.

We also want to thank the amazing people who also stepped up to to foster Teeny in the event she was not adopted by October 5th πŸ™πŸΎ

The power of community and collaboration ❀️

Welcome home, Teeny! 🏑
