West Michigan & the Grand Rapids Area in partnership with the Close-Up Foundation, have been national leaders in citizenship education for over three decades. Close-Up was first introduced to the Grand Rapids area in 1975. Our local leaders, including President Gerald Ford, have always understood the importance of citizenship education. ofit that exists to educate and inspire young people to participate in our democracy. They fulfill their mission with exciting, hands-on programs for students and teachers in Washington. We use the city as a living classroom, giving students unique access to the people, processes and places that make up our nation’s capital. Our students are a diverse group – coming from every state and beyond and from all walks of life. Over 650,000 have graduated from our experiential programs. Countless more have participated on our TV show and used our textbook (Current Issues) to debate hot issues in classrooms nationwide.

In addition to having students on the regular Close Up Washington program last week, we conducted two special programs in partnership with the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) and the National Indian Education Association (NIEA). Both programs are designed to help Native American youth better understand the unique nature of dual citizenship and the complex relationships between tribal and federal governments. Check out the video featuring a student explaining the Community Action Project that she developed on the program.
