Grand Island has deep roots as a welcoming and inclusive community founded by immigrants. This history is celebrated through the creation and revival of the Ethnic Festival—now known as the Global Roots Festival.

We deeply appreciate the Grand Island Community Safety Planning message and their continued commitment to fostering trust, safety, and collaboration in our community.

At the Grand Island Welcoming Initiative, we believe that moments like these remind us of the importance of coming together — to celebrate what makes Grand Island truly special: our compassion, our diversity, and our shared humanity.

On Sunday, we were made aware of banners with divisive messages displayed at the Sycamore and Eddy underpasses.

We are in communication with the Grand Island Police Department, with whom we’ve built a relationship of trust. Those who discovered the banners are taking the appropriate next steps by filing a report. We are aware of two banners and are deeply grateful to the community members who acted quickly to remove them, helping protect our community’s safety and ensuring those messages did not receive attention.

These messages do not represent who we are in Grand Island. More importantly, we see this as an opportunity to share a positive message that reflects the heart of our community. Grand Island is a welcoming, diverse, and an inclusive place for all people.

Together, we stand for what makes our community strong: connection, understanding, and care for one another.
