James Armstead married Myrtle "Myrtie" Moody in Grand Haven in 1901! After they were married they built and lived in their home at South Fifth Street, shown here.

James was born near Cleveland, Ohio in May 1855. He came to Grand Haven with his family in 1870, and attended high school there. He spent one year at Grand Rapids Commercial College, and worked three years for the Crystal City Glass Works in Detroit. He returned to Grand Haven in 1877 as head clerk at the Cutler House. James was named Secretary and Treasurer of Dake Engine Company when it was organized in 1887, and became secretary and general manager at a later re-organization.
