Hard to believe it’s been 9 years since Hurricane Harvey.
Harvey was actually the first time I ever went out and did anything like this. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into at the time. I just knew there were people who needed help, and I wanted to do whatever I could.
That experience changed something in me.
Seeing the destruction was something I’ll never forget, but neither was seeing people come together. People were showing up with their boats, trucks, equipment, supplies — whatever they had. Most of us didn’t know each other. It didn’t matter. People needed help, so people showed up.
That’s really where my passion for helping others started.
I definitely didn’t know back then where it would eventually lead, but looking back now, Harvey was the beginning of the road that eventually led to Lone Star Rescue & Recovery.
A lot has changed in 9 years. I’ve learned a lot, made mistakes, gained experience, and met some really good people along the way. But the reason for doing it has always stayed pretty simple.
If somebody needs help and we’re able to help them, we should.
Harvey was my first time answering that call. It definitely wasn’t my last.
