SIL - The International Society of Limnology

SIL - The International Society of Limnology The International Society of Limnology promotes and communicates new and emerging knowledge among lim SIL is an international scientific society.

Members come from about 84 countries and
increasingly from tropical regions. Scientific credibility is an essential underpinning for
SIL.
• SIL is concerned with all aspects of lakes, rivers and wetlands, i.e. all freshwater and
inland saline ecosystems.
• Fundamental knowledge of the structure, function and temporal change of inland aquatic
ecosystems is essential for the diagnosis and solution o

f problems. Such knowledge is the
key for the protection and sustainable use of these ecosystems worldwide.
• SIL holds congresses every three years in various countries. These well attended
congresses have workshops, plenary speakers, contributed sessions, and provide scientific
excursions to diverse aquatic habitats in the host country.
• SIL publishes a scientific journal and other scholarly publications. The journal provides a
worldwide overview of limnological research and thinking.
• SIL has Working Groups dedicated to exploring new ideas and methods, fostering
communication, promoting limnology, and protecting the inherent qualities of all inland
aquatic ecosystems.

Presented during the ASLO-SIL 2026 Joint Meeting in Montréal, this life-time achievement award recognizes exceptional contributions to the advancement of limnology and honours the legacy of Einar Naumann and August Thienemann, two pioneers who played a foundational role in the development of SIL and the field of inland water science.

SIL wholeheartedly congratulates the 2026 recipients:
David Hamilton
Judit Padisák
Warwick F. Vincent

We thank them for their lasting contributions to limnological research, education, and the global scientific community.

🌍 A new perspective article by SIL President María de los Ángeles González Sagrario has been published in Inland Waters. The article highlights ongoing challenges within academia and discusses pathways to strengthen participation, representation, collaboration, and accessibility across the global aquatic sciences community.

📖 Read the article here to explore how we can move toward a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable scientific system in inland waters research:

Despite efforts to address disparities, entrenched inequalities persist within the scientific system. This article explores the multidimensional nature of these inequalities and outlines targeted s...

Looking for a team members or a job ?

At the SIL booth during the ASLO-SIL Joint Meeting, we will have a community Job Board where you can post open positions from your lab, institute, or project team.

Whether you are recruiting students, early-career researchers, or collaborators, this is a great way to connect with the limnology community 🌍💧

Researchers and students looking for new opportunities are also encouraged to visit the booth and check the board throughout the meeting 👀

See you at the SIL booth next week!
