Praying for Eyes to See
Psalm 119:11-19
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
-PSALM 119:18
One of the most popular videos on social media recently featured Tommy, a visually impaired toddler, sitting on his father's lap in a doctor's office. While a half million viewers and I watched, an ophthalmologist fitted Tommy with special lenses to improve his limited eyesight.
When his doctor rested the tiny pair of glasses on his nose, Tommy's eyes flew open. He pointed to the light in the ceiling, then at a toy on the floor. Finally, he turned to face his father. When their eyes met for the first time, Tommy's little mouth dropped open, and he sucked in a breath. "Dada!" he exclaimed.
I'm not physically blind like Tommy, but my spiritual vision often needs improvement. Sometimes I jump into my Bible reading with eyes clouded by apathy, impa-tience, or boredom. When I approach Scripture this way, I don't see everything good God has for me.
But when I pray the psalmist's prayer, "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law, (Psalm 119:18) He often sends insight and understanding. He helps me see the wisdom of hiding His word in my heart to protect myself from sin (v. 11) and brings me joy through mr Bible study (v. 16). Best of all, I catch glimpses of m.
ather's face on every page.
Tommy needed a doctor's help to see with his physical eyes. We need God's help, every day, to see with spiritual eyes the wonders He has provided in the Scriptures.

Relentless Love

1 John 3:16-18
Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. —1 JOHN 3:18
Heidi and Jeff came home from an overseas work assignment in a hot climate and settled for several months near family in the state of Michigan-just in time for winter.
This would be the first time many of their ten children had seen the natural beauty of snow.
But winter weather in Michigan requires a lot of warm outerwear, including coats, mittens, and boots. For a large family, it would be quite an expensive undertaking just to outfit them for the bitterly cold months ahead.
But God provided. First, a neighbor brought over foot-wear, then snow pants, then hats and gloves. Then, a friend urged others at her church to collect a variety of warm clothes in all twelve sizes for each member of the family. By the time the snow arrived, the family had exactly what they needed.
One of the ways we serve God is by serving those in need. First John 3:16-18 encourages us to help others from the abundance of our own possessions. Serving helps us to be more like Jesus as we begin to love and see people as He does.
God often uses His children to fulfill needs and to answer prayers. And as we serve others, our own hearts are encouraged as we encourage those we serve. As a result, our own faith will grow as God equips us for service in new ways (v. 18).

Can We Relax?

John 14:25-31
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. —JOHN 14:27
Darnell entered the physical therapist's office knowing he would experience a lot of pain. The therapist stretched and bent his arm and held it in positions it hadn't been in for months since his injury. After holding each uncomfortable position for a few seconds, she gently told him:
"Okay, you can relax." He said later, "I think I heard that at least fifty times in each therapy session: 'Okay, you can relax.
>>
Thinking of those words, Darnell realized they could apply to the rest of his life as well. He could relax in God's goodness and faithfulness instead of worrying.
As Jesus neared His death, He knew His disciples would need to learn this. They'd soon face a time of upheaval and persecution. To encourage them, Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to live with them and remind them of what He had taught (John 14:26). And so He could say, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you....Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (v. 27).
There's plenty we could be uptight about in our everyday lives. But we can grow in our trust in God by reminding ourselves that His Spirit lives in us—and He offers us His peace. As we draw on His strength, we can hear Him in the therapist's words: "Okay, you can relax."

Restored Joel 2:18-2/
I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten.
-JOEL 2:25
A few years ago, an infestation of Mormon crickets caused more than $25 million in lost crops. The crickets came in such numbers that people couldn't so much as take a step without finding one underfoot. The grasshopper-like in-sect, named for attacking the crops of the Utah pioneers in 1848, can eat an astounding thirty-eight pounds of plant material in their lifetimes, despite being merely two to three inches long. The impact of infestations on farmers livelihoods—and the overall economy of a state or country-can be devastating.
The Old Testament prophet Joel described a horde of similar insects ravaging the entire nation of Judah as a consequence of their collective disobedience. He foretold an invasion of locusts (a metaphor for a foreign army, in the minds of some Bible scholars) like nothing previous generations had seen (Joel 1:2). The locusts would lay waste to everything in their path, driving the people into famine and poverty. If, however, the people would turn from their sinful ways and ask God for forgiveness, Joel
custs have eaten" (2:25).
says the Lord would "repay [them] for the years the lo-We too can learn from Judah's lesson: like insects, our wrongdoings eat away at the fruitful, fragrant life God intended for us. When we turn toward Him, and away from our past choices, He promises to remove our shame and restore us to an abundant life in Him. Kirsten
