It’s and here are 10 Fascinating Facts About Breastfeeding, Human Milk, and the Microbiome!

1. Human milk is a living tissue.
It contains living immune cells, stem cells, enzymes, and bioactive molecules that help fight infection, promote healing, and support the development of the infant’s organs and immune system.

2. Colostrum is a natural vaccine.
The first milk produced (colostrum) is rich in secretory IgA, lactoferrin, and leukocytes — making it a newborn’s first immune system before their own immune defenses are fully developed.

3. Breast milk adapts to meet baby’s needs.
Milk composition changes by the hour, by the day, and even from one breast to the other based on baby’s age, time of day, and even illness. When a baby is sick, breast milk increases in immune-boosting components.

4. Breastfeeding supports maternal health.
Mothers who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and postpartum depression.

5. Breastfeeding regulates infant microbiome colonization. Breast milk contains over 700 species of beneficial bacteria and prebiotic human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which help establish a healthy gut microbiome critical for immune and brain development.

Breastfeeding support isn’t just for moms who are struggling.

Every family’s journey is different. Some come to us before baby is even born. Others need help after a NICU stay, while exclusively pumping, managing mastitis, navigating tongue ties, increasing supply, weaning, or simply making sure everything is going well.

No matter where you are in your journey, you don’t have to do it alone. 🤍

And some clients you’ll also remember forever.

Feeding is not just about the mouth.

One of the most overlooked parts of infant feeding is body structure and function because babies feed with their entire body, not just their latch.

A baby’s ability to:
• comfortably turn their head BOTH directions
• tolerate tummy time
• use their neck, shoulders, and core muscles well
• maintain proper jaw alignment and tongue function
• stay organized and relaxed during feeding

…all plays a role in feeding success.

When babies have tension, tightness, torticollis, body asymmetry, jaw restriction, oral tension, or difficulty using their muscles effectively, it can impact:

• latch quality
• milk transfer
• ni**le pain
• breast refusal
• reflux-like symptoms
• clicking or leaking milk
• feeding fatigue
• slow weight gain
• overall feeding progression

This is why a thorough feeding assessment should look at the WHOLE baby not just the mouth.

Tummy time, positional variety, body movement, and addressing structural tension can make a significant difference in feeding outcomes for some infants.

Sometimes feeding challenges are not simply a “supply issue.”
Sometimes the body is communicating that additional support may be needed.

Feeding is functional.
And function involves the entire body working together.

At Lavender Lactation, we believe in looking at the full picture to support both baby and parent through the feeding journey.

Yesterday in our lactation mentorship program we learned about supplemental nursing systems! These are undervalued tools that can greatly enhance the success of the nursing dyad. A few reasons why we love the as

- can guide a baby back to breast after refusal or aversion
-can help in cases of breastfeeding in adoptive and relactation cases.
-can help with slow preference when bottles are used often
-can help with offering more volume in issues of slow or low weight gain

These are just a few reasons why we use this tool in our office and train our interns in its value!
