A 32-foot RV is expected to arrive in Charlotte next week to support the LGBTQ+ and underserved communities as part of a national tour.

The "Caravan of Hope" plans to visit 17 cities, including places such as Chicago, Denver, and Oklahoma City, in 31 days. The tour is led by Angela Giampolo, a lawyer behind the initiative that will provide a range of free services.

โ€˜Things like name changes, gender marker changes if the state laws permit,โ€ Giampolo said. "A lot of the states were going to itโ€™s not legal to change their gender marker anymore. It was previously when I went in the past.โ€

Giampolo started the initiative in 2016 in response to Trumpโ€™s first election, when members of the LGBTQ+ community reached out with concerns about their rights. When deciding what places to visit, Giampolo says she chooses cities that are closer to rural areas and where people who are part of the LGBTQ+ communities would feel comfortable coming out to seek support.

A letter from the Kansas Division of Vehicles dated 23 February is reportedly being sent to the homes of transgender Kansans informing them that they must surrender their driver's licenses and that their current credentials will be considered invalid upon the House Substitute for Senate Bill 244โ€™s publication in the Kansas Register today (26 February).

House Substitute for Senate Bill 244 was passed on 17 February after the Kansas House overrode Governor Laura Kellyโ€™s veto. Because of this, Kansas-issued driver's licenses and identification cards must now reflect the credential holder's โ€œs*x at birth.โ€

The letterโ€” as seen by Erin In The Morningโ€” notes that the Legislature "did not include a grace period for updating credentials," and anyone operating a vehicle without a valid credential "may be subject to additional penalties." Those whose gender marker does not match their s*x assigned at birth are directed to surrender their current credential to the Division of Vehicles for reissuance.

The consequences for noncompliance could escalate quickly. Under Kansas law, driving without a valid license is a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. A conviction triggers an automatic 90-day license suspension. If a person drives during that suspension, they face a charge of driving on a suspended license, which carries a mandatory minimum of five days in jail. Kansas requires county jails to house inmates by s*x assigned at birth.

November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we acknowledge and honor the trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming lives cut short by anti-trans violence. With the rise of anti-trans laws, attacks on health care, and hate crimes, the fight for their futures and their rights is urgent.

Trans and nonbinary people deserve more than equality โ€“ they deserve safety, dignity, joy, and more than anything, they deserve to grow old.
