Katie got the herd all wound up tonight. She was running, bucking and kicking for a few minutes before I started filming. And just look at Gracie go!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY-Mayor Walter of the Oatman, AZ herd (formerly).

Walter was born July 5, 2019 to Nadine of the Oatman herd. Nadine was just one year, and eleven months old at the time and a very small donkey. For whatever reason she rejected Walter and Brad and Kelly Blake adopted him on the spot from BLM. Walter was hand raised in the Blake household until he was a year or so old. He was gelded at the appropriate age, and he was then sent to live outside. The Blake's took Walter and their 4 German Shepards on almost nightly walks and published those live video's for all to watch and enjoy. Walter became quite the celebrity and participated in many local events. He was offically given the title of "Mayor" by the Oatman Chamber of Commerce. In time Walter needed a friend, so the Blakes adopted another donkey who they named Betty P. Betty was another orphaned baby donkey, and a very welcome addition to the house. As Walter, and now Betty's fame grew so did the followers to their page and they now have 513,000 followers! Presently Walter and Betty are being boarded at SOS Donkey Haven while Kelly recuperates from a serious illness. We hope to see them all back in Oatman very soon!

Walter's lineage: Great-Grandmother Dusty: (10-18-2007 to Tornado)
Grandmother: Destiny (9-2-2015 to Dusty)
Mother: Nadine* (8-2-2017 to Destiny)
Uncles: Charlie (8-23-16 and Marshall (10-28-2017)

*Nadine had a second foal in October of 2020 in the BLM holding facility in Florence named Disco, and that foal did not survive.

The girls got let out to graze on Thursdays in the afternoon when Kay and Bruce volunteer. Poppie and Maggie couldn't get enough of Kay today, and she got lots of loving from these sweet girls. They then turned their attention to Phil, and even Sally backed up to Phil (no photo) for him to scratch her butt. I guess Margaret and I are chopped liver, ha! We love that our herd is so socialized and enjoy all their people.

As I passed by my kitchen window this morning I thought I saw Winnie, our black donkey in the Western corral. On a closer look I could see it was in fact a big ole black mama cow draining our little bitty bird bath (in comparison to the cow), we keep out so the birds don't try to get in the water troughs. Not much water for the cow, but she seemed to enjoy what she got.

Our Wednesday evening volunteer Danette was throwing out some good donkey vibes tonight. Poppy wouldn't leave her alone and after numerous demands for butt scratches, came and played with her hair and sniffed all over her head. We mentioned that Gracie would do that to us, and no sooner had we said that but Gracie came over and spent several long minutes snuffling Danette's head. We asked Danette what her alluring shampoo is.

Margaret had help this morning in the Little's lean-to. We had it closed off because these three were trying to get a leg up in getting to the freshly stocked straw in their manger, while grass hay was still on the ground. More commentary on the video!

Mother Nature teased us all afternoon on Sunday, and put on a heck of a great lightening show while the girls were out on the propery, but nothing else happened. As soon as we finished chores this morning, the sky opened up and we had a good 7 minute downpour. We will take what we can get!
