Molly Cornwell Thompson was awarded Citizen of the Month in March 2024 and continues to demonstrate what it means to uplift the community. With well over a decade of seeing the potential of Globe and bringing the vision to life, our only regret is that we can't award Molly every single month! Catch her in the arts, warmly smiling while welcoming others, leading tours dedicated to history, inspiring events for families, leading initiatives to bring the community together, or just generally being Molly!

If you know someone who tirelessly and selflessly gives to the community, nominate them with a brief explanation of what makes them stand out. Email nominations to [email protected].

What does is mean to be a good Citizen? While reflecting on this question, we found this article from Brown University. Do you agree with it? What do you think it means to be a good Citizen? Leave your thoughts below!

Being a good citizen includes civic duties, kindness, empathy and community involvement and there are ways to teach kids how to be good citizens.

Reflecting on past Citizens of the Month, Charlene Giles continues to impress. Awarded in February 2024 as our third ever honoree, she continues to embody what being a good Citizen means. Whether grooming the community's fur friends, serving the city, baking cookies for donation, or jumping on machinery to clear blocked streets, Charlene hears a need and jumps to action.

If you know someone who is always ready to serve others and the community, nominate them at [email protected].

And May's citizen of the month goes to...

MATTHEW STORMS!

Some may know him from American Family Insurance while most will know him from his generous amount of local volunteering.

Always willing to lend a hand and serve our community in big ways, he was an obvious choice for this award.

Here's some of the businesses he's helped through the years: Foster Care Review Board , Cobre Valley Youth Club, Globe Rotary, Miami Rotary, Relay for Life, Miami Lions Club, CCEDC, Gila County IDA, Arizona Spokes, Superior Chamber of Commerce, Globe Downtown Association, CVRMC Hospital Foundation.

Tacos, refried beans, Spanish rice, corn chips, sauce, cupcakes, and chocolate cake set the stage for another successful meal at Madera Peak senior living. A special thanks to Aravapai Cafe and Lydia Miles for getting the tacos done in under 24 hours and for donating the cupcakes; people like her make this all possible.

Each month, Citizens for a Better Community hosts a meal for the seniors who otherwise may not have the opportunity to get out and socialize. With music, raffles, and lively chatter, the seniors at Madera Peak love it!

Eventually, we'd like to bring this concept to other senior living venues. For the last two years, before the successful Senior Citizens Ball, the meals were purely donation based, volunteer led, and oftentimes, paid for out of pocket. While we raised enough to cover several monthly meals for Madera, we will need your support to grow the cause.

Ways to support the cause:
-Donate to Living Waters Community Church (and get a nice tax deduction), they support Citizens in a big way
- Volunteer to help at the next meal by emailing [email protected]
- Donate directly to Citizens for a Better Community

Thank you for all of the support as we set forth to make sure our seniors aren't forgotten!

The first annual Senior Citizens Ball was a huge success! Over 120 tickets were sold, attendees danced through the last song, and everyone wished it could have lasted a little longer. Music set the lively tone as couples and friends swayed to the rhythm, the Grand March offered triumphant excitement, and the decor enhanced an already magical evening. Between donations, ticket sales, the silent auction, and the 50/50 raffle, the event was able to raise roughly $4,000. These proceeds will go towards continued efforts to better the community, including the monthly senior meals at Madera which have been primarily funded personally by the members of Citizens for a Better Community.

Citizens for a Better Community would like to thank the following donors, because without them, this magical event wouldn't have been possible. Thanks goes to Miami High School for letting us use their gym, to Miami Culinary for creating the delightful food, and the Miami student council for the decorations. A huge thank you also goes to Dr. Richard Ramos for being part of the planning, every step of the way. We would also like to thank Service First Realty, Bravo, The Roosevelt Women's Club, AAA Lock Service, Highway 60 Motors, Globe Exterminators, Big O Tires, Cobre Valley Youth Club, Matt Storms at American Family Insurance, Carrie Ann Goshorn at Haven, Heritage Health, Debbie Gudin, Bernie's Awards and Trophies, Claudia and Doug DalMolin, Alonzo White, the band Imagine, and of course the Chamber of Commerce. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers and everyone who sat on the committee to plan it out with surprisingly short notice.

There was so much that went into this and we thank all who shared their time and resources to bring it to life.

If you attended, we'd like to also thank you for making it all worth it. Photos below are courtesy of Alonzo White, Trina Bunger, and Trinity Murchie. Please feel free to download, print, and enjoy these photos as a souvenir of the first annual Senior Citizens Ball.
