If you're going to take out debt, you need to know what you're buying.

The worst college degrees for finding a job aren't the ones you'd expect. Computer Engineering and Computer Science both made the list.

Before anyone comes for me in the comments let me explain what this list actually measures.

This isn't about which degrees are intellectually worthless. It's about which degrees have the highest unemployment rates among recent graduates right now. And some of the results are genuinely surprising.

Computer Engineering sits at 7.5% unemployment. Computer Science at 6.1%. Both made the top 10 worst degrees for finding a job in the current market.

Why? Because the tech layoff cycle of the past two years gutted entry level hiring.

Companies that were overstaffed during the pandemic boom spent 2023, 2024, and 2025 working through that excess. The pipeline of CS graduates kept growing while the entry level jobs dried up.

That doesn't mean these degrees are bad long term bets. A computer science degree at mid-career still pays $115,000. Computer engineering hits $122,000. The income potential is real.

But income potential and job availability right now are two different conversations and most 18-year-olds aren't having the second one before they borrow the money.

Here's the question I tell every parent and student to ask before committing to any degree.

What specific job does this degree reliably lead to and what does that job actually pay in the market I want to work in?

Not the average. Not the best case. The realistic, median outcome for someone with this degree in this market.

A degree is not a strategy. It's a receipt. Make sure you know what you're buying before you finance it at 7% interest.
