At the Cypher Summit, women in hip-hop and street dance came together to share their stories and experiences.

The dance performances, workshops and panel wove a beautiful tapestry of women’s voices, movement, and journey.

The panel highlighted how women have had to fight to be heard and recognized in the culture.

This still matters today because many women are continuing to break barriers and create space for others. When we uplift women’s voices, we build a stronger and more supportive community.

How can you help create space for others to be seen and heard?

Women’s History Month

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill’s journey from The Fugees to her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill shows how important it is to stay true to yourself.

Inspired by Carter G. Woodson’s idea of miseducation and book entitled “The Mis-Education of the Negro”, Lauryn Hill’s music reminds us to learn our own history, think for ourselves and become “self determined”.

This still matters today because young people face pressures from society, and positive role models can help build confidence and inspire healthy relationships. Her message is about self-respect, empowerment, and choosing your own path.

What does “miseducation” mean to you today?

Black History & Hip-Hop

We must credit African American culture that has created much of what is considered American culture, especially the cultural arts we practice and celebrate: 🎶 🕺🏾🎨

Let’s distill this down to Hip-Hop culture. Rap music, our cnn, soundtrack to the streets ~ our lives coming up from school age - adulthood. We acknowledge the artists (pictured here) that have passed due to strokes and stroke related deaths.

Arts & Public Health: Stroke Risk in the Black American Community

Our nonprofit highlights the critical intersection of arts and public health, recognizing health challenges in African American communities, specifically the high risk of stroke.

♥️ Empathy: Black Americans face a higher stroke risk and mortality, often receiving less treatment for complications—a systemic inequality requiring urgent attention.

🧠 Awareness: Racism in healthcare and chronic stress from discrimination significantly contribute to this higher risk, leading to conditions like high blood pressure.

💭 Call to Action: We must question disparities (e.g., would a white patient receive better care?) and advocate for equitable treatment.

🔑 Keys to prevent stroke: Control blood pressure, maintain a healthy diet and weight, get regular activity, stop smoking, and manage conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol. These lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your stroke risk, with up to 80% of strokes being preventable.

🤲🏽 What Can We Do: Learn F.A.S.T. stroke signs (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911) and schedule regular check-ups.

Take Action: Visit stroke.org or call 1-888-4-STROKE.

We honor and celebrate Lunar New Year with the East Asian community diaspora. This tradition originating from China and deeply embedded in the cultures of Korea, Vietnam and surrounding regions, is celebrated widely across Southeast Asia and globally.

In our nonprofit’s quest to connect and correlate the intersection of arts and public health, we will be sharing valuable insights.

We recognize and strive to illuminate challenges the Asian communities face regarding mental health.

Let’s look at this issue from our ♥️ (empathy), 🧠 (awareness), 💭 (questions/thoughts), and 🤲🏽 (what can we do) to better understand and help our community members.

♥️: Mental health is often an uncomfortable topic in the AAPI community, historically linked to weakness or shame, which prevents many from seeking help. A meaningful contrast exists: younger generations are more open to discussing mental health and seeking support, while older generations often believe emotional struggles should remain private. This silence allows suffering to continue.

🧠: Generational ‘tough love’ leads many older adults to suppress feelings, fearing vulnerability is weakness. This pain and pattern of unspoken trauma can repeat in their own families.

💭: We wonder if older adults resent younger generations’ access to support they lacked, and if cultural pressure to present strength and success maintains the silence.

🤲🏽: Addressing mental health stigma is challenging, but necessary for healing across all communities. Change begins with individuals courageously seeking treatment or speaking openly. Progress requires collective efforts to create safe spaces, including adding culturally aware mental health programs in schools and community care to normalize these discussions.
