We attended several city council meetings with the hope of one day seeing the Pride Flag raised in Los Gatos. Each time we were there, we would always notice a group of youth sitting in the meetings.
When each of them spoke up, one by one, at the council meetings, we could not believe what we were hearing. We heard their very well thought out arguments in support of seeing the Pride Flag raised and what it meant to them.
We heard the anti LGBTQ harassment they have had to endure. We heard their stories of struggling to feel safe and supported in our current anti LGBTQ political climate.
We want to acknowledge Nova, Siyona and all of the youth that showed up to be heard. It took a lot of courage and bravery for each of them to share their stories. Please note that they cannot vote yet, but they stood up for themselves. They have set an example for Adults to follow.
If you truly want to support the LGBTQ community, we encourage everyone to Please participate in your local city council meetings and volunteer for LGBTQ non profits to help create a safe and welcoming place for our LGBTQ communities. Our LGBTQ youth are at higher risk for depression and su***de. As adults, let's do our part to protect our youth.
*If you are feeling depressed or suicidal please call 988.
You are not alone.
