Employees and Community Honor the Legacy of Governing Board President Sheila Uggetti.

"Sheila committed her entire life to public education. To say she was a champion for students, educators and families would be an understatement" 😊

Governing Board President and GPS leader Sheila Uggetti passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, leaving a powerful legacy in the district and public education as a whole.

Sheila spent over 50 years serving her local community in public education, 40 of those years as an employee of GilbertPublic Schools. She was a teacher of Special Education and regular education for 17 years. She also served as an Interim HR Director at the beginning of the phenomenal growth in Gilbert and for 21 years she was the Principal of Gilbert Elementary School. In 2010 Sheila moved back to her hometown of Douglas, Arizona, where she served as Superintendent of Douglas School District until her retirement in 2015. During the 2015-2016 school year, she worked with ASU mentoring principals and served as a substitute principal for GPS. Sheila received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education and Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from ASU. She also spent 8 years as an adjunct professor for NAU. Sheila was first elected to the Gilbert School District Governing Board in 2016 and was appointed in 2020 when there were only three candidates for three seats. For the 2024/25 school year, Sheila was serving in the role of Governing Board President.

A few weeks ago, Southwest District of hosted our annual “Day of Play” at Sunshine Acres— one of our favorite signature service projects of the year. 💙
For the past 10 years, Kiwanis Clubs and Key Clubs from across our division have come together to create a fun, joy-filled day for the children and house parents at Sunshine Acres.

This year, around 70 children and house parents joined us, along with 40+ Key Club members and 30+ Kiwanians and guests who helped set up, run games, serve food, and make the day special.

The kids enjoyed carnival games, face painting, hair chalk, bounce houses, a basketball game, corn hole tournament, prizes, and a big hot dog barbecue. We also added two new games this year — Pirate Putt-Putt Mini Golf and an Under-the-Sea Obstacle Course — thanks to Debra from the Kiwanis Club of Gilbert.

A huge thank-you to everyone who volunteered, donated, sponsored, cooked, served, cheered, and helped bring this day to life.

As Sunshine Acres shared, “The kids and staff look forward to our event every year.”
This is what Kiwanis is all about — showing up, serving kids, and creating moments where every child feels special. 💙

At Williams Field High School, the club participated in activities such as writing pen pal letters, organizing the school's Trunk or Treat, crocheting hearts to give to fellow students, teachers, and the elderly, and they completed a course in Seizure Recognition and Epilepsy Awareness, earning them certification. One of the biggest off-school events was Kids Day at Arizona State Fair where they raised donations for the United Food Bank.

Club elections begin in April, and events carry through the following school year. A Student President leads each Key Club and has a school sponsor who coordinates the events.

If you'd like your child or teen to get involved in an impactful organization that directly supports our local community, DM us today! If your school does not already have a Key Club, there are other opportunities available.

Woohoo!!🙌🏼 The Kiwanis Children's Fund is pleased to thank everyone who participated in our fourth annual Kiwanis Day of Giving.

On February 25 and 26, Kiwanians came together to raise US$156,663. We surpassed our goal of $125,000 — and it will help Kiwanis reach nearly 70,000 kids around the world.

The work we do to help kids around the world through our grants cannot be done without support like yours🙏🏼. On this inspiring occasion, we are proud to present a special message of gratitude from 2025-26 Kiwanis Children’s Fund Trustee Jeffrey Wolff.
