We would like to introduce the newest member of the Breezy Parrot Rescue family, Ozzy! 🥰

Ozzy is a handsome 25-year-old Greater Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo who recently came into our care.

Ozzy comes from a wonderful, loving family who unfortunately experienced a change in circumstances. They were faced with the incredibly difficult decision to find him a new home, but ultimately wanted to do what was best for him. ❤️

We know that surrendering a beloved family member is never easy, and we have nothing but respect and appreciation for a family who puts their bird's well-being first. We are grateful they trusted Breezy Parrot Rescue with Ozzy's next chapter.

For now, our focus is on helping Ozzy settle in, getting to know his personality, and making sure he feels safe, comfortable, and loved. 🥰

Breezy Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary had so much fun being part of Mars High School’s Rio After Dark Homecoming!

The kids had an absolute blast meeting our feathered friends, taking pictures, and making unforgettable memories! ❤️

Thank you to Mars High School for inviting us to be part of such a fun and special night! We loved every minute of it!

🦜 Halloween Parrot 101 — Breezy Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary

Some monsters don’t hide under your bed…

Sometimes they’re hiding in your bird room. 👻

☠️ SIN #1 — SKIPPING QUARANTINE

Bringing home a new bird and immediately introducing them to your flock can put EVERY bird at risk.

Some diseases can be carried without obvious symptoms.

🚪 New bird = separate quarantine area + veterinary guidance/testing before introductions.

🩸 SIN #2 — IGNORING NIGHT FRIGHTS

A sudden noise or shadow can send some parrots into a panic after dark.

A terrified bird can thrash around the cage and injure itself.

🌙 A calm sleeping environment and, for birds prone to night frights, a small night-light may help.

🚬 SIN #3 — SMOKING AROUND YOUR FLOCK

Cigarette and cigar smoke, va**ng aerosols and other airborne contaminants don’t belong around parrots.

Their respiratory systems are incredibly sensitive.

💀 What barely bothers YOU can be much more dangerous for THEM.

🔩 SIN #4 — LETTING THEM CHEW RANDOM METAL

Parrots explore EVERYTHING with their beaks.

Unsafe metal objects may expose birds to toxic metals such as lead or zinc.

Keys, jewelry, old cages, hardware and mystery-metal toys aren’t automatically bird-safe just because your parrot loves chewing them.

👻 SIN #5 — THINKING “CHUBBY” IS CUTE

Obesity isn’t cute when it’s affecting your bird’s health.

Too many high-fat treats + poor diet + little activity can contribute to weight problems.

⚖️ Know your bird’s healthy weight and track it with a gram scale.

🦶 SIN #6 — NEVER CHECKING THOSE FEET

Look underneath!

Red spots, sores, swelling or changes in how your bird grips a perch deserve attention.

Offer appropriately sized perches with variety rather than forcing those feet onto the exact same shape and diameter 24/7.

🧟 SIN #7 — A LIFE INSIDE AN EMPTY CAGE

Food. Water. Perch.

That’s survival—not enrichment.

Parrots are intelligent animals that need opportunities to forage, chew, shred, climb, play, train and interact.

A bored parrot may scream, destroy things or develop unwanted behaviors.

🕷️ Rotate safe toys.
🎃 Create foraging activities.
🦜 Teach new behaviors.
🌿 Provide safe things to destroy.

➡️ Biting is often communication. Watch body language, respect boundaries, and don’t force interaction when your bird is clearly saying NOPE.

➡️ Chewing and shredding are natural behaviors. Give them plenty of safe things they’re actually ALLOWED to destroy.

Okay, THIS one can actually be scary. 😳
Parrots naturally hide signs of illness.
➡️ A sudden change in appetite, droppings, activity, breathing, weight, or normal behavior deserves attention. When something seems wrong, contact an avian veterinarian.

🧙‍♀️ THE POSSESSED FOOD BOWL
Throws perfectly good food onto floor.

➡️ Some food tossing is normal, but enrichment and foraging can make mealtime much more interesting.

Tonight’s horror story isn’t about ghosts…

It’s about the everyday dangers hiding in your parrot’s home. 👻

🩸 THE WINDOW OF DOOM
Glass doesn’t look like a wall to a flying bird. Windows and mirrors can cause serious collisions. Help your bird recognize large glass surfaces and supervise flight time.

💀 THE PERCH FROM HELL
One-size dowel perches don’t give feet enough variety. Offer appropriately sized natural branches and different safe perch surfaces. Check those little feet regularly for redness, sores or pressure spots!

👻 THE 3 A.M. MONSTER
Parrots need consistent, uninterrupted sleep. A bird staying up with the family night after night may not be getting enough rest. Give your flock a quiet, dark and predictable bedtime routine. 🌙

⚰️ THE HEAVY METAL HORROR
That random chain, bell, cage hardware or piece of jewelry might look harmless—but unsafe metals can cause poisoning if chewed or swallowed. Know what materials your bird’s cage, toys and hardware are made from.

🧟 THE SCALE DOESN’T LIE
Parrots can lose weight before an owner notices anything visually different. A gram scale and regular weight tracking can help you recognize unusual changes early.

🚽 THE OPEN-WATER NIGHTMARE
Toilets, sinks, buckets and other open containers of water can become drowning hazards. Close toilet lids and never leave your bird unsupervised around water.

🕷️ THE CEILING-FAN MASSACRE
Flying bird + spinning ceiling fan = an emergency nobody wants.
FAN OFF before BIRD OUT. Every. Single. Time.

🔌 THE ELECTRIC BITE
Parrots investigate with their beaks. Electrical cords can look like the world’s greatest chew toy—until they’re not. Keep cords protected and inaccessible.

🚪 THE DOOR OF NO RETURN
Everyone in the house needs to know when the bird is out. One opened exterior door can change everything in seconds.

🎃 THE FINAL HORROR…

You have an emergency.

You grab your phone.

And realize you don’t know where the nearest veterinarian who treats birds is. 😱

Have a secure travel carrier ready.

Because some of the scariest things for parrots aren’t monsters hiding under the bed.

They’re hiding inside our homes. 😱

🕯️ THE BEAUTIFUL SMELL OF DANGER
Candles, plug-ins, essential-oil diffusers, aerosol sprays, smoke and heavy fragrances can irritate a parrot’s extremely sensitive respiratory system.
☠️ If you’re questioning whether that smell belongs around your bird—don’t risk it.

🍫 THE POISONED TREAT
Chocolate, avocado, alcohol and caffeine have NO place in your parrot’s treat bowl.
🎃 Just because we can eat it doesn’t mean they can!

🩸 THE BLOOD FEATHER
A broken blood feather can bleed significantly. Every parrot household should have an emergency plan and know which avian veterinarian or emergency hospital they’ll contact BEFORE something happens.

🕸️ THE TOY THAT TURNED INTO A TRAP
Frayed ropes, loose strings, unsafe bells, tiny openings and damaged toys can become strangulation, entanglement or injury hazards.
🔍 Inspect those toys regularly!

👁️ THE EYES ARE WATCHING YOU…
Pinning eyes. Raised feathers. Tail fanning. Leaning away. Open beak.
Your parrot is constantly communicating.

🎃👻 PARROT 101: THE REAL HORROR STORY 👻🎃

Think ghosts are scary? 😱
Try owning a parrot without knowing the basics! 💀

🩸 THE SEED-ONLY DIET
A bowl full of seeds may look harmless… but a poor diet can contribute to obesity and nutritional deficiencies. Pellets, fresh vegetables and a properly balanced diet are important for most parrots.

☠️ THE TOXIC KITCHEN
Overheated nonstick/PTFE-coated cookware and appliances can release fumes that can be deadly to birds. Smoke, aerosols, strong fragrances and some cleaning fumes can also be dangerous to their sensitive respiratory systems.

🕷️ THE HAUNTED CAGE
Dirty food and water bowls can grow bacteria and biofilm. Wash bowls thoroughly every day—and change water whenever it becomes dirty. Fresh food shouldn’t sit around spoiling.

🧛 THE VAMPIRE BITE
Parrots don’t bite because they’re “evil.” Biting can come from fear, hormones, overstimulation, territorial behavior or ignored body language. Learn what your bird is telling you BEFORE those little scissors attached to its face find you. 😂

🪦 THE DEADLY ESCAPE
“But my bird’s wings are clipped!”
Clipped birds can STILL fly, especially with wind or adrenaline. Open doors and windows can turn one mistake into a nightmare. Screens, secure carriers and properly fitted harnesses can save lives.

🧟 THE HORMONE MONSTER
Dark hidey-holes, tents, boxes and petting down the back or under the wings can encourage hormonal behavior. Keep affection to the head and neck and remove nesting opportunities.

🔪 THE SILENT ILLNESS
Parrots are prey animals and may hide signs of sickness until they’re seriously ill. Changes in droppings, appetite, weight, breathing, activity or behavior deserve attention. Establish care with an avian veterinarian before there’s an emergency.

⚰️ THE SCARIEST FACT OF ALL…
Some parrots can live for DECADES. They aren’t decorations, impulse purchases or “easy pets.” They need proper nutrition, enrichment, veterinary care, social interaction and a long-term plan.

🥭 A LITTLE STORY TIME ABOUT MANGO 🦜

Meet Mango, a Double Yellow-Headed Amazon who recently came into Breezy.

Mango came to us because of aggression issues. And honestly, after spending some time with her, we’re starting to think the word “aggressive” may not tell her story at all.

Mango is mostly blind. She can really only see shadows. Imagine trying to live your life when you can’t clearly see the people, hands, objects, or surroundings coming toward you. Now imagine someone suddenly reaching for you.

Scary, right?

We’ve noticed that when we slow down, announce ourselves, and give Mango a little time, she does much better. She’s already showing us that she can trust us, and I’ve even been able to get her to step up. ❤️

We don’t know Mango’s exact age. We were told she is in her 30s, but honestly… we suspect this girl may be even older. And after everything she’s been through, she deserves to spend whatever time she has left feeling safe, understood, and respected.

Mango will be a sanctuary bird here at Breezy and is NOT available for adoption.

Sometimes a bird doesn’t need to be “fixed.”

Sometimes they just need someone to finally understand why they’re afraid.

🎃🦜 BOO! LET’S TALK PARROT DIET & BOWLS! 👻🥦
Because the scariest thing this Halloween shouldn’t be what’s lurking in your bird’s food bowl! 😱

🧟 THE SEED-ONLY MONSTER
Seeds can be part of some birds’ diets, but an all-seed diet can be nutritionally unbalanced and high in fat. A quality pellet-based diet with appropriate fresh foods is often a healthier foundation for many parrots.

🥦 BREW UP SOME FRESH GOODNESS! 🧙‍♀️
Offer a variety of bird-safe vegetables and greens. Think bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, leafy greens, squash and other colorful veggies! 🌈

🍬 TRICK OR TREAT? WATCH THE SWEETS!
Fruit can be a tasty addition, but don’t let sugary foods take over the bowl. And human Halloween candy? NOPE! 🚫🍫 Chocolate can be toxic to parrots.

☠️ THE FORBIDDEN CAULDRON
Keep known hazards like avocado, chocolate, alcohol and caffeine away from your flock. When you’re unsure about a food, check before sharing it.

🦠 BEWARE THE HAUNTED WATER BOWL!
That innocent-looking bowl can develop a slimy layer of biofilm. Dumping the old water and simply refilling it isn’t enough—bowls need to be thoroughly washed regularly.

🧛 STAINLESS STEEL FOR THE WIN!
Stainless-steel bowls are durable and generally easier to thoroughly clean than scratched or porous materials.

🎃 FRESH FOOD DOESN’T BELONG IN THE BOWL ALL DAY!
Fresh produce can spoil. Remove leftovers promptly, especially in warm conditions.

👻 DON’T LET DIRTY BOWLS COME BACK FROM THE DEAD!
Check food and water bowls throughout the day. If your parrot dunked pellets, food, toys—or POOPED in the water—it’s time for fresh water and a clean bowl! 😂💩
