Saturday morning coffee and Northwest Ice Hockey Friday night recap. The Varsity Jags faced-off against St. John Varsity B team for the first time this season. In a season where they have often been out gunned and have struggled against superior teams, the Jags put together their most complete and inspired game of the 2021-2022 season. Behind strong net minding from Jonah Boles, each Jag player stepped up to the challenge playing aggressive and tight defensive hockey not allowing St. John’s to get on track. Senior Captain Evan Steinberg put the Jags up 1 – 0 scoring an even strength goal late in the 1st period. After successfully killing off a 5-on-3 short-handed situation earlier in the 2nd period and overcoming the loss of Senior Defenseman Jackson Cruze after being on the receiving end of a vicious and game misconduct & major penalty boarding hit from a St. John player, Senior Ben Linteris scored an amazing redirect goal off of a cross ice pass from Evan Steinberg to put the Jags up 2-0 at the end of the 2nd period. Early in the 3rd period, the Jags tired and St. Johns score three quick goals over the span of two minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Then for the last ten minutes of the game, the Jags showed resolve and played gritty team hockey just missing the back of St. John’s net on several quality scoring chances. In the end, the Jags came up short on the score board but the Jag Nation in attendance clapped in admiration of the inspired team effort! Well done Jags!
