Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. 🔥🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
🔥 Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
🔥 If you must burn, avoid windy days
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Know the state burn law and local restrictions

Power outages can happen at any time, including during winter storms, heavy snowfall, or downed utility lines.

Portable generators can be a temporary solution for powering appliances, but they emit carbon monoxide (CO), a poisonous gas.

The risk is real:
• Portable generator incidents lead to preventable CO poisonings every year
• The most dangerous setup: generators used too close to the home or in/near garages

Use generators safely:
✅ Outdoors only
✅ 20 feet (7 metres) from doors, windows, vents
✅ Never in an attached garage (even with the door open)
✅ Exhaust directed away from the building

Fall fire season is here, bringing increased fire danger to an already dry Virginia. Most wildfires are started by people, with escaped debris being the leading cause. Here are some key practices for preventing wildfires:

🚫 Avoid having outdoor fires on dry, windy days
🔥 Keep fires small and far from vegetation
🪣 Have tools and water on hand
📱 Have your phone ready to call 911 in case of an emergency
👀 Stay with your fire until it's out cold

Hiltons Volunteer Fire Department recently presented Chief Dale Sanders a plaque in appreciation for his loyal and dedicated service to the department and the Hiltons community for 50 years. Presenting the plaque is President Michael Lane (left) and Assistant Chief Henry Hartsock (right).

Established in 1962, the Hiltons Volunteer Fire Department serves the Hiltons community and surrounding areas within the Department’s 69 square mile service area.

The 4 PM Burning Law is in effect from February 15 to April 30. This law prohibits open-air burning before 4 PM during this time.

What is prohibited?
-Burning before 4 PM
-Burning within 300 feet of woodland, brushland, or fields with dry grass
-Leaving fires unattended within 150 feet of woodland, brushland, or fields with dry grass
-Starting new fires, adding fuel, or rekindling fires after midnight

What is permitted?
-Burning between 4 PM and midnight with proper precautions
-Burning yard debris, leaves, trees, brush, and garden trimmings

What are the penalties?
-A fine of up to $500
-Payment of court costs and fire suppression costs if the fire escapes

If you plan to do a controlled burn, please call the Scott County Non-Emergency number and let them know your name and the location of the controlled burn
