The Prom Access Project

The Prom Access Project Helping students attend prom with confidence by providing free borrowed prom dresses.

03/14/2026

The Prom Access Project is a community-based program designed to ensure that every high school student has the opportunity to attend prom with confidence and dignity. Through a dress lending program, donated formal gowns are made available free of charge to students who may not have access to formal attire due to financial barriers. Students borrow dresses for their prom event and return them afterward so that the gowns can continue to serve future students. By recycling and sharing formalwear, the program promotes community generosity, sustainability, and equal access to one of high school’s most memorable experiences.
Prom is an important milestone for many high school students. However, the cost of attending prom, including attire, can prevent some students from participating. Formal dresses can cost anywhere from $100–$600, creating a financial barrier for families already managing other essential expenses. Without support, some students may:
• miss prom entirely
• feel excluded from peers
• experience unnecessary financial stress
The Prom Access Project removes this barrier by providing free access to prom dresses through a community lending program. The Prom Access Project collects donated prom dresses from community members, local boutiques, and businesses. Students can browse and borrow dresses at no cost through scheduled shopping appointments designed to feel like a boutique experience. After prom, dresses are returned, cleaned, and prepared for the next student.
Program services include:
• free prom dress lending
• dress donation drives
• student fitting appointments
• community volunteer opportunities
Because dresses are borrowed and reused, each donation can help multiple students over several years.
The long-term goal is to expand the Prom Access Project into a statewide program, creating prom dress closets in multiple communities and ensuring that no student misses prom due to financial barriers.
