We had our food order come in today, nearly 220 lbs for almost 200 dollar, incl. a tray puppy food for some skinny newly mommas. Our wormer and Simparica stash is empty as well, so we are looking forward to get our refill soon, total another $192. 😭
Simparica has made such a difference for many ‘half’ owned dogs since they just eat it like a treat. Luca, Brownie and especially Rosie are the best examples. Mange is going through town all the time.
We were lucky to find an affordable generic wormer that incl tapeworms, and with a little peanut 🧈 it’s just a treat, but helps the street dogs a lot.
One dog at a time! 🐕

Some kids found 4 kittens on the tracks in LG and we promised to pick them up tomorrow. Then in the evening I thought nope, ran down to LG, found the kids with the kittens and took them in. 3 in the carrier, one tux straight on my laps, wrapped in and given some replacer. He wouldn’t have lived another hour outside in the laundry basket.
Racing back to Garryowen and now Charlene is working her magic.
The one tux is really weak, but a little while on the heat pad it’s getting already slightly better. We named him Finn, thought if he’ll die right on my laps, not without a name!!
So let’s see how they’re doing through the night, they are probably 2 weeks old.
Keep your fingers crossed for little Finn!! ❤️‍🩹

Oreo has left us. I will update later what happened, there was too much going on, but I went back after bringing Brownie home and stayed with him til the end.
Rest in peace, say hi to your brother and the others.

Another former Lodge Grass dog tested positive for heart worm. 🐛 🪱
Get your animals tested, get the young one on preventatives, it is not that expensive and we can help with affordable sources for it.
Let’s get a handle on this before it spreads more!
Cats can get it too!!! 🐈‍⬛ 🐈 🐱 🪱

PSA—-Another Heartworm Positive Dog

Our cool dog Norman tested positive for heartworm today. We are working our way thru the roster of dogs to get everyone tested, but Norman had developed a cough so he moved to the top and got tested today.

Many people are surprised when they hear that, because we live in Montana. The truth is, heartworm disease is here. While it isn’t as common as in the southern United States, we are seeing more positive dogs every year—including right here in our own rescue.

Heartworms are spread only by mosquitoes. It takes just one infected mosquito bite to infect a dog. The disease isn’t contagious from dog to dog, but once infected, the worms grow inside the heart and lungs, causing damage that can become life-threatening if left untreated.

Sadly, many dogs don’t show obvious signs until the disease has already progressed. Some may develop:
🐾 A persistent cough
🐾 Exercise intolerance
🐾 Fatigue
🐾 Weight loss
🐾 Difficulty breathing

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable.

A monthly heartworm preventative costs far less than treatment and protects dogs from a disease that is painful, lengthy, and expensive to cure. The American Heartworm Society recommends that dogs receive heartworm prevention year-round, even in colder climates. Mosquito season is becoming longer and less predictable, making prevention more important than ever.

Norman now begins a long road to recovery. His treatment will require months of restricted activity, multiple veterinary visits, medications, and lots of patience. It is a difficult journey, but one we will gladly take with him.

If you have a dog, please talk to your veterinarian about heartworm testing and prevention. Even here in Montana, no dog is completely safe from mosquito bites. And the more dogs that get infected, the more likely the heartworm cases will spread.

Please keep Norman in your thoughts as he begins treatment. We know he’s a fighter, and we’ll be beside him every step of the way. ❤️
And PLEASE share so that ownets can protect their pets❤️

Yesterday a dog got somehow tangled up and wasn’t able to escape the heat, he passed away.
Please don’t keep your dogs and cats outside in the plain sun. They don’t sweat like we do to regulate their temperature. Dehydration kicks in quick, even with water offered. Cats usually don’t drink before experiencing already dehydration, everything above 80F is already too much for cats. 😿
Dogs that are panting a lot loose fluids quickly, so please have water in reach to replenish and to avoid dehydration. 🐶🐕
Provide shade! If they need to be tied up, at least give them the option to crawl under your house. A dog house sometimes heats up too much itself. 🏠
If you see an animal struggle, please help or say something, call somebody! 👮
Don’t look the other way! Care! ❤️‍🩹
Let’s get through the heatwave with empathy & decency! 😍

Meet Hank and ‘a girl with no name, yet’! They stopped by today to get their first round shots and dewormer. We are glad to made this a permanent installation on Saturdays for peeps and puppies to receive this free service (Donations are welcome!)
Keep ‘em healthy, keep ‘em well. We love it when the kids bring them in. They have so many questions which we gladly answer and more. 😉🍡
