Alexa Rose Foundation

Alexa Rose Foundation The Alexa Rose Foundation exists to elevate artists and enliven the Boise Valley with world-class public art.

Honoring artist Alexa Rose Howell, the Foundation has awarded a million+ dollars through our annual Artist Grants and Alexa Rose Fellowship. Alexa Rose and Ken Howell envisioned a foundation that propel local artists interested in furthering their creative work. Alexa Rose Howell, who passed away in 2013, believed strongly in the value of the arts and humanities. The Foundation provides substantia

l impact on the lives of creative citizens, giving them access to the catalytic experiences and skills they need to develop as artists and as people. The Foundation's area of impact focuses on Ada and Canyon County, Idaho, and seeks to include descendants of Boise River Valley Tribes (wherever they may reside).

It’s been scientifically studied that touching earth can positively alter our brain chemistry. Artists experienced it firsthand while learning the process of making adobe brick at , bricks that will last in the valley for generations.

The Alexa Rose Foundation believes that travel, shared inquiry, and time spent in conversation with artists, landscapes, and materials can deeply shape creative practice. Earlier this year, as part of an experimental research component of the Show and Tell Residency Program, the Foundation traveled with 14 resident artists and arts leaders through Joshua Tree, CA to visit artist-built spaces, studios, and sites of creative investigation.

Throughout the trip, the artists considered a guiding question:

“How do we build creative lives rooted in expansive investigation that can sustain momentum in our practices?”

Experiences like our visit to Yucca Valley Material Lab remind us that discovery often happens through direct engagement — through touching, making, listening, and learning together. Encounters with new materials and ways of working open up unexpected pathways.

One resident artist wrote:

“The Yucca Valley Material Lab visit opened up this whole new way of looking at art practice for me…like ‘Wow, you can do that? I can do that!’ I will be thinking about it for a long time.”

We’re grateful for the artists, organizers, and spaces that made this kind of collective learning possible. 🙏🏽☀️
