Tomorrow is National Dog Day, but some of our favorite dogs each deserve their own day of recognition. Did you know that Galveston Police Department has four incredible K9 officers, each trained to provide specific services?

MEET CHURCH | GPD K9 OFFICER SINCE 12/2025

He has a favorite toy. He loves belly rubs. Dinner is, without question, the best part of his day. And apparently, even when he's off duty, Church has plenty to say—he frequently yelps and barks in his dreams.

Church is also a very social dog… as long as he has his Kong. Give him his favorite toy and you've got a happy, friendly K9.

But when Church puts on his working hat, he's got a much more important job to do. Church is one of the highly trained K9 officers who serves alongside the men and women of the Galveston Police Department. His ability to do that job takes much more than a leash and a badge. K9 teams require specialized training, equipment, veterinary care and ongoing support to stay ready when the community needs them.

That's one of the reasons the Galveston Community Police Foundation is committed to supporting GPD's K9 teams.

Over the next few days, we're introducing you to all four of GPD's K9 officers—and showing you the dogs behind the work.

For today, though, we have just one question:

Just a few Angel donations make a huge difference...

These drones, purchased by the Galveston Community Police Foundation with donated funds, give GPD officers an additional resource for search and rescue, locating missing persons, documenting scenes, assessing situations from above, and responding safely when every second matters.

We’re excited to celebrate the holiday season with our Galveston community!

This is what community support looks like.

Thanks to generous donations from Galveston community members, the Galveston Community Police Foundation was able to purchase ballistic vest plates for the Galveston Police Department SWAT team.

It’s more than equipment—it’s an investment in the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.

Dogs like Jorka serve a vital function in the Galveston Police Department. Trained K9 officers assist with search and rescue, narcotics detection, suspect apprehension, and officer protection. Their presence increases effectiveness, saves lives, and helps de-escalate high-risk situations. They are also great at public relations.

Maintaining and training a K9 is not cheap. Estimated costs for care, gear, training and more can be anywhere between $5,000 and $15,000 per dog, per year. You can help to offset the cost of a K9 unit and in doing so, make Galveston a safer place to live and visit. Honor their service by becoming a K9 sponsor.

This is what community policing looks like.

At the city's Summer Youth Program's Back to School Bash, officers weren’t just handing out backpacks — they were building relationships with the kids and families they serve every day.

Members of the GPD Dive Team gave kids the chance to get an up-close look at scuba gear, snorkels and masks, while officers provided backpacks filled with school and hygiene supplies to help local students start the school year ready to go. And of course, K9 Norman and Sgt. Dorarty were there to make the day even more special.

This is just one example of the many ways Galveston Police Department gives back to the community it serves. These officers show up not only when they're needed in an emergency, but at community events, in schools, with families and alongside the people who call Galveston home.

And that's why the Galveston Community Police Foundation exists.

Our job is to give back to the men and women of GPD — providing the resources, equipment, training and support they need to do their jobs effectively and continue building the strong relationships that make a community safer.

Police officers are often called on to help others through some of life's most difficult moments. They witness tragedy, respond to crises, and carry responsibilities that most people will never fully understand.
