On Tuesday, the people of Gallup McKinley County voted for a fresh start and a bright future.

In District 2, voters chose Georgianna Desiderio, and in District 5, they chose Val Wangler — both of whom we proudly endorsed. With Chris Mortensen stepping down, this election brings an entirely new lineup to the school board. Change is in the air, and with it comes great promise.

Our newly elected board members — along with Barbara Colaianni Wagner — have all expressed a strong commitment to making our schools more open, inclusive, and responsive. They plan to adjust meeting times, invite public participation, and create advisory councils that give teachers and staff a real voice in district decisions, including the selection of a new superintendent.

This moment marks a powerful step forward. It shows that when our community comes together, change truly is possible. MCFUSE has worked hard to help make this happen, and now we have the chance to collaborate with a school board that values transparency, inclusion, and partnership.

I’m excited to work alongside our new board members and a future superintendent to make our schools an even better place to work, teach, and learn.

Here’s to new beginnings and a bright future for Gallup McKinley County Schools!

We at MCFUSE have tried to communicate to the school board about the major teacher turnover issues the district has, as well as the issues that cause it like overwork, lack of support, and fear of retaliation. To date, no school board member has answered any emails from MCFUSE and we have been refused to address the school board or provide public comment.

Years ago, this was very different. The MCFUSE President spoke at meetings, the community spoke at meetings. They were held after school at a time where the community could more easily go to and were held throughout our district at different schools.

We have a school board that doesn't want to hear from the community or teachers and staff. This has to change. That is why we are endorsing Georgianna Desiderio in District 2, Martin O'Malley in District 4, Dr. Valory Wangler in District 5
