I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #1 THE VILLAGES BUFFALO 🦬🏆

There was only one place we could finish this countdown.

The Villages enters the season at #1 after a 24-8 campaign and a trip to the state championship game.

For us at I-94, they’ve established themselves as part of the upper echelon of basketball in this area. And heading into this season, the combination of talent, size, experience and coaching separates them from the field.

It starts with Aaron Britt, one of the premier talents in the area, but it certainly doesn’t end there.

Miles Simpson. Jomar Bernard . The Villages is loaded with high-level talent throughout the roster, and when you combine those pieces with Coach Carlos and an established winning program, there simply aren’t many weaknesses on paper.

That’s what separates The Villages from some of the other talented teams in our rankings.

There are teams with exciting transfers. Teams with great returning cores. Teams with tremendous individual talent.

The Villages has the talent AND the résumé.

They’ve already been on the biggest stage. Now they return with another roster capable of getting right back there.

Nothing is guaranteed, and #1 in October doesn’t mean #1 when the games matter most.

But entering the season?

The road starts with The Villages.

I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #2 BUCHHOLZ BOBCATS 🐾

Buchholz isn’t ranked No. 2 because of what they might become. They’re here because they’ve already shown us what they are.

The Bobcats are coming off a 21-8 season, finishing as city champions and reaching the Elite Eight before falling to Lake Howell. They were one win away from a trip to the Final Four.

Now they enter another season with unfinished business.

Buchholz loses three important seniors at point guard, small forward and power forward, but much of the foundation remains.

Jacob Bromirski, last year’s leading scorer and a First-Team All-Area selection, returns as the centerpiece. Trey will step into a larger role in the backcourt, and with Coach Harris’ track record developing guards, we expect him to be ready for it.

But what separates Buchholz from some of the other talented teams in this ranking is simple:

They already know who they are.

They know their roles. They know where the shots are coming from. They know how to create those shots within the offense. Several players have spent three or four years in this system.

There’s no mystery about how all the pieces are supposed to fit.

And maybe most importantly, this is a group that appears genuinely bought in. They’ve played together, they’re close away from basketball, and they’ve already experienced what it feels like to be one game away from the Final Four.

Other teams may have added more names.

Buchholz already has the blueprint.

Call #2 a hot take if you want. We see a team with talent, continuity, chemistry and postseason experience, and we expect them to be right back in the conversation.

I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #3 OAK HALL EAGLES 🦅

When was the last time you heard somebody say they were going to Oak Hall for basketball?

Exactly.

But times have changed.

Oak Hall is coming off a 13-11 season, and this year’s roster looks completely different. Talent-wise, there might not be many teams in the area with more pieces.

It starts with Avery Jones, one of Florida’s most highly regarded players in his class, already receiving national attention and earning an invitation to a USA Basketball junior minicamp.

But Avery isn’t the only young name attracting attention.

Marco Wilson is legit. He’s another high-level young talent beginning to generate attention beyond the area, giving Oak Hall two young players with serious upside and growing recognition.

Then there’s Evan McCumber, who we believe could start almost anywhere in the area. Willie Brooks is another impact addition capable of doing the same. Amari provides an experienced senior guard, Max can light it up from deep, and CJ returns after earning All-Area honors.

So why isn’t Oak Hall #1?

Because basketball isn’t a collection of names.

There’s only one ball.

Players who could be featured somewhere else will have to accept different roles here. Somebody’s shots will decrease. Somebody may not start. Somebody will have to impact games without being the guy every night.

Can everybody buy into that?

Then comes the other question: can Oak Hall establish the X’s and O’s, rotations and culture necessary to turn all this individual talent into winning basketball?

That’s why #3 feels right.

The talent demands respect. The roster has our attention. But after a 13-11 season, Oak Hall still has to prove that all these pieces fit.

And they’ll get their opportunities. PK Yonge. Eastside. The Villages. If Oak Hall wants to establish itself among the area’s elite, the schedule will give them the stage to do it.

Oak Hall has built the roster. Now they have to build the team.

I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #4 PK YONGE BLUE WAVE 🌊

On paper, PK Yonge might have one of the most talented rosters in the area. But games aren’t played on paper.

The Blue Wave are coming off a 13-14 season, ending in the Sweet 16 against First Academy. Now, expectations have completely changed.

PK returns its core while adding two experienced senior guards from The Rock in Kayden Merricks and Kyroe Jordan, plus Levi off the bench. DC brings experience in the backcourt, Jayden returns after earning First-Team All-Area honors as a freshman, and Trey Sean is another All-Area selection.

Then there’s Geno Hall.

Geno appears to be playing some of the best basketball of his career, controlling the paint, running the floor and finishing above the rim while picking up college interest. Kyroe also looks increasingly comfortable creating, making reads and running the show.

The pieces are absolutely there. Talent-wise, this could become one of PK Yonge’s best teams in years.

But that’s exactly why #4 feels right.

This is still a group coming off 13-14. A huge offseason doesn’t automatically erase last season. PK has to turn all that talent into chemistry, wins and consistency.

The ceiling is extremely high. Now they have to reach it.

I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #5 EASTSIDE RAMS 🐏

Last year’s run caught some people by surprise. This year, Eastside won’t have that luxury.

The Rams are coming off a 17-9 season and an Elite Eight appearance, falling 58-46 to Atlantic after leading at halftime. Along the way, Eastside picked up quality wins over Trenton, Williston, Hawthorne and Bradford, finishing the season ranked No. 90 in Florida by MaxPreps.

Eastside loses Raheem Littles, Gage Weber and Brian Hayes, but the core remains.

Their leading scorer is back, and Jermaine Gladin enters his junior season after showing he can really go. This is an experienced group that has already felt the pressure of postseason basketball.

And something Coach Pop told us during our Courtside Conversations interview sticks with us:

They were one year away.

Well, this is that year.

With most of the core returning, a manageable district and a favorable postseason path, Eastside has an opportunity to turn last year’s unexpected run into the expectation.

They’ll play just about everybody, too. So if the Rams belong among the area’s elite, they’ll have plenty of chances to prove it.

Last year showed us the potential. This year should show us the finished product.

Trenton isn’t rebuilding. They’re reloading.

The Tigers are coming off a 25-5 season and a trip to the State Final Four, where their run ended against Williston. Most importantly, much of the group responsible for that run is back.

THE CORE REMAINS

Trenton returns its main trio of Mason VunCannon, Tyler and Marc,
along with forward Noah Owens. They do lose captain and senior leader Nathan Ridgdale, but the addition of Brody Sapp gives them an experienced guard who should make an immediate impact.

Sapp has played plenty of basketball, and his style should fit naturally into what Trenton has built over the last two seasons: athletic, physical and disciplined basketball.

NOW, TEST IT

At No. 6, Trenton sits in an interesting spot. As we get closer to the top five, the margins between these teams are getting smaller.

We know Trenton can win. Now we want to see them against more of the area’s elite.

If the schedule gives them opportunities against programs like The Villages, Andrew Jackson or Providence, those games could tell us much more about where Trenton stands and prepare them for another postseason run.

And with a favorable path in their classification, another trip to the Final Four is certainly within reach.

The pieces are there. The experience is there. Now comes the next test.

I-94 PRESEASON RANKINGS | #7 COLUMBIA TIGERS 🐅

Columbia showed us two completely different basketball teams last season.

One version looked capable of playing with anybody in the area. The other left you wondering how the same group could look so different from one night to the next.

The Tigers finished 17-12 and reached the Elite Eight, eventually falling to Fleming Island, a team that went on to play for a state championship. Along the way, Columbia had enough quality results to prove its ceiling. They split meetings with Buchholz, The Rock and Williston, while also picking up a win over Bradford.

But that résumé tells the other side of the story, too.

WHICH COLUMBIA ARE WE GETTING?

Columbia could beat a quality opponent one night and look completely outmatched against another one.

They were beaten 60-35 by Buchholz, then later came back and beat the Bobcats 40-38. They were beaten 55-37 by The Rock, then turned around and beat The Rock 73-63. Continue—->

That’s a massive swing.

Even some of Columbia’s better wins weren’t always convincing. They had close games against teams they were capable of separating from, and that inconsistency is ultimately what keeps the Tigers at No. 7.

Because talent isn’t really the question here.

THE PIECES ARE STILL THERE

Columbia graduates four seniors, including big man Terrence Tolbert, but plenty of important production remains.

They return their leading scorer, experienced guard play and multiple pieces from the rotation that made last year’s Elite Eight run possible. Kadrian Wilson gives them another versatile piece on the wing, and there’s enough size and experience around this group that Columbia shouldn’t have to completely reinvent itself.

That’s what makes them interesting.

The floor is already established. Now Columbia has to raise its ceiling.

The Tigers don’t need to prove they can win basketball games. They did that last year. They need to show that their best version can become their normal version, especially when the competition gets tougher.

At No. 7, they’re sitting right in the middle of this ranking for a reason. We can absolutely see Columbia climbing.
