Big thank you to our volunteers who helped make this rag bunting decoration for our community events!

Bunting has its roots in 17th-century Britain and early America. Originally a naval term, it referred to the lightweight wool fabric — buntine — used for flags, ribbons, and signal-flags aboard ships. By the 18th century, bunting had expanded beyond maritime use and became a beloved form of festive and patriotic decoration appearing at colonial gatherings, and becoming especially prominent during the Civil War.

Rag bunting in particular carries an echo of something older. Its tattered, wind-worn strips recall the ancient Celtic healing practice of tying rags to trees near sacred wells — the “clootie wells” of Scotland and Ireland (from the Scots word clootie, meaning cloth). Pilgrims would knot a piece of cloth to a branch, often dipped in the well’s water, believing that as the rag faded and dissolved, so too would the illness, grief, or burden it represented. Rooted in pre-Christian pagan ritual, this tradition survives into the present day — a quiet lineage that threads itself into the rustic beauty of rag bunting 🌞

We're excited to host our first traveling storyteller, Frank Salzano of the Medicine of the Starry Heavens, visiting from Western North Carolina. Frank is an astrologer, cultural astronomer and storyteller that focuses on Vedic astrology, cross-cultural star myths and celestial folklore.

His magic is storytelling under a starry night sky, taking listeners on a mythopoetic journey that weaves the latest in cultural astronomy with the evolution of the world’s mythologies, cross-cultural star lore, ancient astrology, and ancestral perceptions, for an embodied ritual relationship to the starry heavens. We’re excited to host him in collaboration with the FOLC Farm.

In honor of Venus’s upcoming retrograde and descent into the Underworld, Frank will lead us in a storytelling under the stars, for a contemporary telling of Layla & Majnun, the classic Sufi folktale popularized by Nizami, the great 12th-century Persian epic poet. This tale is like Romeo & Juliet meets the enchanted, animist heart of the indigenous desert soul.

Time: 6-9pm // Doors - 6pm, story - 6:30pm
Where: The FOLC Farm, 3625 SE 15th St, Gainesville FL
Free, donation suggested: $12-36
All donations go to the storyteller

Welcome! The Wild Twin Community Folk School nurtures grassroots community connection around old ways of human-being — storytelling, song, ritual, music, celebration, craft, and relationship with place. We are a group of non-experts working together to offer wholesome, meaningful alternatives to the perfectionism, isolation, and rush of modernity. Through our gatherings, seasonal festivals, and workshops, we aspire to tend the village fire, keep alive the old ways, and nourish our relationships with land, spirit, and each other.
