On average, 65% of high school students in Alachua County graduate on time in four years, and less than 50% of Alachua County high school students from low-income homes graduate on time. This is obvious in the high school graduation statistics, but how does it affect the elementary school students that Kids Count serves? With greater than 85% of students from low income homes, five of Alachua Coun
ty elementary schools score 30 – 45% lower on standardized tests when compared with the top six elementary schools. The children who do not succeed in school are likely to face huge challenges to succeed in life. Crime has been proven to be correlated with illiteracy, and to be successful in today’s world, having a high school degree is a bare minimum. Kids Count strives to provide Alachua County elementary school children with the best opportunities for successful lives. Kids Count’s vision is that all elementary school children who need extra support to succeed in school and in life will have those opportunities in our community. That is why Kids Count provides after school programs that support each child holistically.
