The increase has prompted hospitals in the region to begin to prepare for a surge of sick patients, according to the director of the Orange County Health Care Agency.

After the first infection was reported in late January, it took till June 12 for Orange County to reach 10,000 cumulative cases. Less than a month later, the county reached 20,225.
