I watched a lot of Donald Trump over the past couple of days, and the one thing I'll say about what I've seen is that he looks tired and defeated.
I'm pretty sure this is how his tone and demeanor were each and every time one of his many businesses failed and he was forced to declare bankruptcy all those times. Except now he's 80 and doesn't appear to be in the best of health.
Even as he's tried to throw out one excuse after another to defend his absolutely disastrous deal with Iran, it's all fallen flat. Even he doesn't seem to believe the very bullsh*t he's trying to con everyone else into believing.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think his total failure with Iran will be a huge part of what defines his legacy as a president: Donald Trump, the president who started a war only to end up with a worse deal than the one he tore up.
Especially when you consider that the main reason he tore that previous deal up was his never-ending jealousy and hatred of our nation's first Black president, Barack Obama, and his obsession with trying to undo everything Obama did in an effort to erase his legacy.
Once you see how Trump runs a country, it becomes very easy to see why so many of his businesses failed. A perfect example of the Dunning-Kruger effect, he's an imbecile who thinks he's smarter than everyone else and really only has one business "strategy": trying to abuse whatever power he has in the hope of getting his way. When that doesn't work, he throws a hissy fit, whines, cries, and claims everything is "unfair" or "rigged."
Then, like the toddler that he is, if that doesn't work, he gives up and walks away.
My theory has been that this deal Trump just signed with Iran has been on the table for weeks, if not months, but that he really thought, at least initially, that he had a massive upper hand. He thought that if he just sat there and waited, eventually Iran would crumble and he would get everything he wanted.
That never happened, and growing bored with the war — which I truly believe he thought would be just like Venezuela: a quick military strike, the removal of a few leaders, and a new, friendlier regime taking over — he finally caved and agreed to this embarrassing agreement with Iran.
Which is why there's no planned string of events for Trump to go tout his this Iranian deal to his MAGA cult. Which is why this administration waited so long to confirm the details of what it had agreed to with the Iranians. Which is why, even as we learned what was actually in this agreement, Trump kept calling it "fake news." Which is why Trump isn't going to be part of any ceremony created solely as a photo op to commemorate the signing of this deal with Iranian leadership.
No matter what he says, deep down, he knows this is a massive defeat for him and his legacy as a president — he lost.
Which is why, when I watched Trump over the past couple of days, I saw a beaten, disinterested, distracted, worn-out old man. His face looked puffy, he looked like he'd gained weight, his hair looked more disheveled than usual, his eyes looked blank, his body language was low-energy, and even his speeches seemed more meandering and unfocused than usual.
He looked like someone coming to grips with the fact that he may have just cemented his place as one of, if not the, most incompetent presidents in history.
Which is exactly how I believe the history books are going to remember him.
