🌲 Big news for Frisco riders and trail lovers! 🚲

The Frisco Backyard is a local gem. This 3,026-acre parcel in the East Zone of the Dillon Ranger District sees roughly 251,000 visits annually. Now, after years of planning, starting with scoping in 2023 and public comments in 2025, implementation officially kicked off in June 2026!

While the project tackles vital forest goals like fuels management, SCoMBA has its eyes on the dirt. A massive 17 miles of trail are slated to be rerouted, reconstructed, improved, or newly built. Plus, another 14 miles of social trails will be formally adopted into the National Forest System.

🔥 The Highlight: A purpose-built, black-rated downhill-only trail could be coming. Broken Wheel was the first in the Dillon Ranger District. A brand-new trail on Ophir Mountain could be the second. We need your help to make it happen!

The SCoMBA Board of Directors is excited to announce Lesley Mumford as our new Executive Director. As SCoMBA’s first full-time Executive Director, Lesley will continue our growth trajectory by building upon the successes of her predecessor and our dedicated volunteers. We are confident she will skillfully lead SCoMBA into its next chapter.

Lesley is a dedicated community leader, conservationist, and certified mountain bike coach with a lifelong passion for connecting people to the outdoors. Her background seamlessly bridges natural resource management, local government, nonprofit leadership, and competitive cycling. Rooted in public service, stewardship, and community impact, her career includes 14 years working for the Summit County Government as well as prior experience as a park ranger for both Colorado State Parks and Larimer County Parks and Open Lands. She first moved to Summit County in 1996 when she briefly worked as a lift operator at Keystone. She’s called Summit County home since 2004. She brings extensive executive experience to her work after leading a health and human services nonprofit for nearly nine years, all backed by a BS in Natural Resources Management with a minor in Political Science from Colorado State University.

For Lesley, a bicycle has always been a ticket to freedom. Since getting her first banana-yellow Cannondale F700 in the mid-90s, she has been an avid rider, competing in recent years at the regional and national levels across cross-country, enduro, fat-bike, cyclocross, and gravel disciplines. She translates this deep love for the sport into mentorship as a dual-certified coach through both the PMBIA and BICP. She has shared her expertise coaching riders for prominent organizations and institutions, including the Summit Tigers, The Cycle Effect, VNTRbirds, and the Colorado School of Mines. Driven by a firm belief in the powerful sense of community and belonging that grows around cycling, Lesley knows firsthand that everyone can benefit from a bike ride and remains deeply committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity and access to ride.

🚵‍♂️ SCoMBA is back from the COMTB Coalition Summit in Black Hawk, and the future of Colorado mountain biking is looking bright! 🌲✨

We teamed up with fellow Colorado IMBA chapters, land managers, and industry leaders to talk about everything from trail projects to the legislative policies shaping our rides.

Here are the major takeaways every Colorado rider should know:
🏗️ Trail Show & Tell: Big shoutout to this year’s host, COMBA! They showed off incredible work on Maryland Mountain, Virginia Canyon, and Floyd Hill, sharing invaluable insights on land manager relationships and liability.
🤝 Summit County Outdoor Coalition: As new members of our local Regional Partnership Initiative (RPI), we are officially at the table balancing recreation growth, climate resilience, and conservation right here at home.
🪓 Land Manager Updates: USFS and BLM shared that budget and staffing constraints mean they are relying on local chapters like us more than ever for trail maintenance. On the policy side, comment periods are closed for the Travel Management Plan and Roadless Rule revisions—next up is the Identification of Alternatives. Note, Colorado has its own Roadless Rule codified in law and Federal changes shouldn’t affect roadless areas in Colorado.
⚡ The Industry Landscape: Bicycle Colorado is proposing legislative changes to separate E-Motos from Class 1-3 E-Bikes, establish minimum operator ages, and standardize labeling. Meanwhile, the bike industry experts (Yeti, Orbea, Revel) noted that E-bikes are experiencing a global boom, while thin industry margins and the arrival of "32ers" are keeping everyone on their toes.
🗳️ The COMTB Coalition supports Prop 137: Keep an eye on this! Without raising taxes, Prop 137 would allow the state to keep existing outdoor equipment tax revenue and dedicate it directly to conservation projects.

SCoMBA commented on behalf of our 345 members. We support opening trails currently accessible to traditional mountain bikes to Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes and adaptive bikes. Our Board arrived at this position after a thorough review of environmental analyses and final decisions that resulted in Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI). Conversations with local land managers confirm that Class 1 eMTBs pose no greater ecological or environmental threat than traditional mountain bikes. Perceived tension between e-bike riders and other trail users is primarily a social conflict rather and it can be effectively managed. Management includes standard trail etiquette, rider education, and clear signage. Class 1 eMTBs can be integrated into our trail systems with social management frameworks.

We strongly oppose an "open unless closed" policy for traditional motorized recreation (ATVs, OHVs, and dirt bikes). Introducing high-powered, traditional motorized vehicles to existing hiking, biking, and equestrian trails will severely impact user experiences and escalate user conflict. Traditional OHVs carry significantly higher weight and speed profiles than class 1 eMTBs and adaptive bikes, which would dramatically accelerate trail erosion and exceed current volunteer and agency maintenance capacities.

We urged the Forest Service to ensure future management frameworks remain firmly rooted in peer-reviewed recreation science and local district capability.

We want to thank our volunteers for the more than 380 hours invested in this project. Also, thank you to our donors who helped us reach our financial goals. We could not have completed this section of the Soda Creek Trail without you. SCoMBA has additional projects in the Soda Creek Valley scheduled for 2027. Follow along for updates. Our 3rd reroute on the Soda Creek Trail is complete! Thank you to the USFS Dillon Ranger District, Higher Ground Earthworks, and the 35 volunteers who worked over 380 hours to absolutely crush the finish work on the trail! We are grateful for the $20,000 grant we received from the National Forest Foundation along with the many generous donors who provided an additional $10,000 to close our funding gap!

This reroute was sorely needed to move the trail from wetlands that flooded in good snow years and required intensive maintenance to keep it open to hikers and bikers. We hope you’ll enjoy the new route as it takes you over the wetlands on a bridge and into a forest of spruce, fir, and pine unlike any other section of the trail. Skiing and snowshoeing should also be very good, since the shady north side of the hill will preserve the snow.
