Our 3rd reroute on the Soda Creek Trail is complete! Thank you to the USFS Dillon Ranger District, Higher Ground Earthworks, and the 35 volunteers who worked over 380 hours to absolutely crush the finish work on the trail! We are grateful for the $20,000 grant we received from the National Forest Foundation along with the many generous donors who provided an additional $10,000 to close our funding gap!

This reroute was sorely needed to move the trail from wetlands that flooded in good snow years and required intensive maintenance to keep it open to hikers and bikers. We hope you’ll enjoy the new route as it takes you over the wetlands on a bridge and into a forest of spruce, fir, and pine unlike any other section of the trail. Skiing and snowshoeing should also be very good, since the shady north side of the hill will preserve the snow.

SCoMBA is rerouting 1.34 miles of the Soda Creek trail, and replacing it with 2.34 miles of new trail. This reroute is included in the USFS Dillon Ranger District's Swan Mountain Project Environmental Assessment. The reroute is needed to move the trail out of seasonal wetlands and off of heavily eroded fall line sections.

With this plan, we need an additional $10,000. Will you contribute and help get us there?

This trail work is being done in three phases. The first phase was finished in the Fall of 2025. The middle phase was completed this Spring. And this final phase will be built largely by a contractor, followed by volunteers who will finish the tread.

SCoMBA applied for two grants to pay the contractor. We are so grateful to receive one $20,000 grant from the NFF Ski Conservation Fund. Special thanks to them! But unfortunately, we were not successful in winning a grant from the Colorado Parks & Wildlife non-motorized trails for this project.

The project has been reorganized so that the contractor will take on the major earth-moving work with a mini-excavator, and our amazing volunteers will complete the finishing work.

Trail Construction Shortfall

We are so grateful to the community who came out to support our fundraiser breakfast at the Elks Club Sunday!

We had a great crowd from the youngest to the most seasoned. It was a great looking group and all the talk of mountain biking helped motivate us even more.

This past Thursday, Summit County Mountain Bike Alliance finished this .8 mile reroute on the Soda Creek Trail!

The reroute moves the trail up onto the west slope and eliminates the maintenance-intensive trail in the wetlands below and a steep, eroded climb on the south end.

The reroute was part of about 10 miles of reroutes in the Soda Creek valley approved by the Dillon District Ranger as part of the Swan Mountain Project a couple of years ago with the intent of making the trails more sustainable and greatly decreasing trail
maintenance.

The reroute takes you through varied terrain, from sage covered slopes to several areas of aspen and fir forests. The views are pretty amazing, too!

By the way, we know the County is short of technical, difficult trails. SCoMBA is forming a progressive trails committee to help focus attention on that lack. We would love to have you be part of the solution! Please send an email to [email protected] to express your interest.

On RAM Legacy in Action Day, we were excited to partner with Silverthorne Elementary to help improve their bike park for local students in grades K–5. Together, 16 volunteers spent the day reshaping berms and rollers on the pump track, rebuilding a jump feature, and making improvements focused on long-term trail durability and sustainability, all while enhancing the riding experience for young riders.

Projects like this help create opportunities for the next generation to build confidence on bikes, connect with the outdoors, and develop a lifelong appreciation for trails and active recreation. Partnerships like these help inspire the next generation of riders, trail stewards, and outdoor advocates while strengthening access to safe, fun places to ride in our community.
