Winter in Washington state can sometimes feel endless and lead to feelings of seasonal depression. Having a simple conversation with your teen over a fun activity can make a difference. Check out these indoor recommendations and share more ideas in the comments!

Members of the Helping Out Teens Society (HOTS) presented to the San Juan County Board of Health alongside other youth prevention groups from Lopez and Orcas Island. Each group shared the work they are doing in their schools and communities, and HOTS split into two to give both a PowerPoint presentation and a hilarious skit performance!

The energy and confidence that these youth groups brought into the room left the Board of Health inspired.

Our goal at FHYC is to continue advocating for health and resilience in our communities and to support groups like HOTS in keeping up their good work.

Fall & winter in the PNW are beautiful, but they can be tough. YAAS! inspired us with their self-care tips, and we want to share a few ideas!

Lean into your community and be intentional about self-care. It’s okay to put sticky notes on your bathroom mirror, ask for support, and take time for yourself. Balance connection with quiet time.

The SJC Youth Community Health Assessment reminds us why this matters: students say our island is great because of strong community support, outdoor fun, and safety. They feel safe in our community, at a friend’s house, or the beach. When it comes to fun, they chose travel, unstructured time, walking and hiking.

And their idea of healthy?

Good habits, being active, eating well, limiting social media, and having community. That’s a great reminder that self-care is about movement, balance, and community. Lean into what makes our island special while caring for yourself this season.

What’s your favorite way to rest and recharge during these short, wet days?

According to the CDC, about 75% of students see v**e ads on TV, social media, or streaming platforms. These products are marketed as colorful, flavorful, and 'less harmful', making them appealing and accessible. Kids are flooded with persuasive marketing, but parents are the strongest defense. Research shows that clear expectations and early conversations reduce the chances of youth va**ng. Start the conversation early, before someone else influences their choices. Take a calm approach, pick the right time, and put yourself in their shoes. And remember, you're not alone! Schools, healthcare providers, and community partners are here to help. The Friday Harbor Youth Coalition is here to empower both parents and youth to make healthy choices.

As we reflect this season, let’s practice gratitude not only for what we have, but for the opportunity to learn, honor, and support Indigenous communities of the past, present, and future. Together, we can create spaces where youth thrive, and resiliency grows.

Native American youth represent about 1% of the youth in our county, according to the San Juan County Health & Community Services Youth Community Health Assessment. Compared to other ethnic groups, Native Americans are among the most vulnerable populations globally for substance-related harm due to historical trauma and systemic inequities. Building a healthier future means learning from the past.

Our mission at the Friday Harbor Youth Coalition is to strengthen community resilience and empower youth to make healthy choices.

This begins with respect for culture, community, and the history that shapes these islands. We acknowledge that we live and work in the ancestral and traditional lands of many Coast Salish peoples, including the Samish, Lhaq’temish (Lummi), Swinomish, Tulalip, Skagit, Stillaguamish, Jamestown S’Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Port Gamble S’Klallam, Muckleshoot, Suquamish, Nooksack, W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich), T’souke (Sooke), lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees), Semiahmoo, Mitchell Bay Band, Swallah, San Juan Tribes and others, who hold rights and responsibilities to these lands and waters.

Last month, we distributed lock bags at the Friday Harbor Middle School and High School Parent-Teacher Conferences and JLSFRC's' Trick-or-Book Event. Our goal is to help parents keep medications secure and prevent accidents and misuse. If you missed out, you can still pick up a FREE lock bag at The Local Dispensary.

Start the conversation - you've got this. What you say matters to your teen.

We'll be at the Parent-Teacher conferences this week distributing free lock bags to help families store medications and substances at home. These bags come with SAMHSA resources to support parents in having meaningful conversations with their kids about alcohol and substance use. Prevention starts at home.
