OUR KENNELS ARE FILLING UP AND OUR OPTIONS ARE RUNNING OUT.
The Sandusky County Dog Kennel is facing an increasingly serious capacity crisis, and we need our community to understand what is happening.
Our facility has a normal maximum capacity of 22 dogs. We have gone over that number twice in the last month.
Since September 1st, 2026:
~42 dogs have entered our facility
~Only 26 have been reclaimed by their owners
~16 dogs are currently in our care
Of our six remaining kennels, two must be reserved for law enforcement agencies bringing dogs into our facility after hours. That leaves us with only FOUR kennels available for regular intake. Twice in the last month, we have set up temporary kennels in our adoption room for the overflow of dogs.
We have FOUR, and the calls continue coming. We cannot refuse a stray dog, we are required by law to pick up all strays. For the last ten years, we have NEVER euthanized a dog simply because we needed kennel space. Not one. That is a standard we have worked incredibly hard to maintain, and one we are pleading to our community to help us keep. Determination alone cannot create more kennel space.
Animal shelters and rescue organizations are facing tremendous pressure. The need for placement is growing, resources are stretched thin, and finding somewhere for an animal to go is becoming increasingly difficult. Unlike some facilities, a county Dog Warden's Office cannot simply stop responding when the kennels are full, as we have statutory responsibilities, public safety obligations, and animals who depend on us.
We cannot control how many dogs will need us tomorrow. We can only control how hard we fight for the ones already here. We need our community's help. We need owners to reclaim their dogs. We need responsible pet ownership. We need adopters, rescue partners, and people willing to share the posts of our dogs that are waiting for homes.
We are sounding the alarm now because we do not want to reach the day when there are no options left. For almost a decade, we have protected our commitment to never euthanizing for space. We are trying to keep it that way.
Please help us continue giving these dogs the opportunities they deserve. The pressure is real and we need your help.
