Legendary Actress of the Indian Subcontinent Smt Nargis Dutt succumbed to cancer in 1981 after battling the disease for one year. During her intense treatment in Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital she expressed great sorrow for those who suffered from this disease but had no facilities to be treated in India. She hoped one day when she got better she could do something about this situation. Her anguish and feelings became a part of Shri Sunil Dutt’s mission in life who turned her dream into a reality. Today they both live through the work of the Nargis Dutt Foundation. It’s been 35 years since Nargisji’s demise and 35 years since the birth of Nargis Dutt Foundation. In these years the Foundation has raised funds across USA and Canada to equip rural hospitals across India with equipment worth more than 2 million dollars. These include cancer treatment and diagnostic equipment as well as mobile hospital vans. The first bone marrow transplant and the ICU center in Tata Memorial Hospital which was carried out at the Tata Memorial Hospital in 1983 was supported by NDF.
Nargis Dutt Foundation (formerly known as Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation in USA) also had its presence wherever there was a national calamity in India, be it the earthquakes in Latur and Bhuj or the floods in Mumbai and Bihar. When Bihar was hit by the floods in 2008, NDF raised funds that treated over 30000 people, over a period of 3 months, through medical camps in the affected areas.
Today Nargis Dutt Foundation is covering areas not only in the medical field but has broadened its vision to health and education. Since 2004, it has been conducting regular medical camps in the slums of Mumbai, working with cancer patients and Tata Memorial focusing on women and children both in health and education. The vision is to deliver basic health care where there is none and ensure quality of learning where there is no opportunity.
Keeping this is mind, for the past 11 years, approximately 30000 children from the slums have received free computer education. The foundation has focused on E- Shalas in schools in Rural India. Work has been going on in Palghar district in a village called Sonave and npw hoping to cover more villages and Zilla Parishad schools in the area. Seeing the impact that the work has had on people, has motivated the foundation team to work harder. Many ask what is the focus of Nargis Dutt Foundation, is it cancer, or children or women, answer is humanity and need. Where ever there is a need NDF will be there in service with whatever resource it can offer. NDF work has been very extensive but silent.
