Moonbound.

We think some introductions are in order…

As many of our followers may already know, back in December, our illustrious leader, Anne Darron, announced her decision to retire in May of this year. Following her announcement, the Board sprang into action, kicking off a thorough, multi-stage recruitment process to identify candidates who could fill Anne’s shoes and help bring WHM into an exciting new era.

We are proud to announce that we have found our new leader in Michelle Rose.

Michelle is a historic preservation expert with decades of experience, a passion for colonial history, and deep ties to the Fredericksburg region. Her past experience includes working with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Pleasant Grove Church & Museum. She even teaches historic preservation law at the Department of Historic Preservation at Mary Washington as an adjunct professor!

Please join us in welcoming Michelle Rose as the new executive director of Washington Heritage Museums!

Special thanks to all of the amazing speakers who participated in our Patriot Legacy Series in honor of Hugh Mercer's 300th birthday celebration: Mark Maloy, Charles McDaniel, Dr. Will B. Mackintosh and Rudy Lane.

Even though we were delayed by the winter weather in January, this past Saturday Rudy Lane captivated us with his presentation and dramatical performance. As a middle-school drama educator, Rudy showcased his talents while portraying multiple characters in an incident that occurred in Williamsburg in April, 1775.

The historical narrative revolves around Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia at that time, who ordered the removal of gunpowder from the public magazine in Williamsburg, triggering outrage across Virginia.

In response, militias and independent companies from the Rappahannock region assembled in Fredericksburg. Hugh Mercer, along with other local leaders like George Weedon, helped organize a force of approximately 600 armed men. At the same time, Patrick Henry led the militia from Hanover County toward Williamsburg to force payment for the gunpowder.

Ultimately, the immediate armed confrontation was de-fused when a compromise for payment was reached. The incident solidified Mercer’s role as a leader of the Virginia forces, leading to his appointment as Colonel of the 3rd Virginia Regiment shortly after.

Rudy Lane's portrayal of this historical episode not only brought the past to life but also paid tribute to the enduring influence of Hugh Mercer. Thank you!
