Planting and Harvesting!🎈🎈Today, two groups came to help at the Farm, in addition to our regular volunteers. At 8:00 AM employees of Spotsylvania County Public Schools arrived and helped us by replanting zucchini and tying tomato plants in our greenhouse. Then at 10 AM the Youth Group from St. George's Episcopal Church - Fredericksburg arrived and helped harvest 122 pounds of zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and cabbages. In addition our volunteers planted lots more zucchini plus some zinnias, marigolds and other flowers. Early this afternoon, Lisa Bruer of Thrivent presented us with a much appreciated supply of water 💦 and electrolytes to assist our volunteers during hot 🥵 weather. Today’s harvest was donated to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. So far in 2026 we have grown and donated over 21,500 pounds of veggies 🥗 to reduce hunger and food insecurity in our community.

Another 645+ pounds harvested and donated today, including cabbage 🥬, spring onions 🧅, kale, tomatoes 🍅, yellow squash and zucchini!!🎈🎈It was a beautiful harvest thanks to our truly AMAZING volunteers. Sadly, today’s onion harvest of 96 pounds was our final onion harvest 🧅 of the season; but these onions have treated us well!! In total we have harvested and donated over 2,700 pounds of gorgeous onions, which our volunteers planted at the end of last year.
Today’s harvest went to The Table at St. George's and the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. We’re excited to be harvesting a broad range of delicious and nutritious veggies 🥗 to reduce hunger and food insecurity in our community. This is a great time of year at our Rappahannock Education Farm!!

Over 1,600 pounds of cabbage 🥬 harvested and donated today, thousands of tomato 🍅 plants 🌱 tied, PLUS an EXCEPTIONAL educational class by Dr. Eric Bonds!!🎈🎈Wow!! What a GREAT day at or nonprofit Rappahannock Education Farm!!! With today’s harvest we are over 20,000 in veggies that we have harvested and donated this year at our nonprofit Farm. All of today’s harvest went to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank whose driver Demar came to the Farm and picked up all of this cabbage!! 🥬 Thanks to the more than 35 volunteers who participated this morning — including members of the Kiwanis Club of North Stafford — we harvested and donated LOTS of gorgeous cabbage. Volunteers also tied tomato plants to provide support as they grow. And then at 11:30 AM, Dr. Eric Bonds shared his amazing journey of transforming his front and back yards from lawn with just grass into spaces where veggies and flowers abound. Eric emphasized that in our Virginia climate we can grow food nearly year round and to maximize yields we can use succession planting where we plant 2-3 successive crops during the year in each location. Eric also shared his three circle ⭕️ diagram of seeking to plant things that: 1.) provide food for humans; 2.) provide food for wildlife and 3.) add beauty to our lives.

Harvesting Cabbage 🥬 and a few Tomatoes 🍅. This morning a nice group representing the board of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank volunteered at our nonprofit Farm. They harvested almost 500 pounds and transported all of the cabbage 🥬 and tomatoes to the Food Bank. The cabbage leaves are also beautiful and nutritious and we were delighted to donate them to the Hub of Hope in Spotsylvania County, which prepares community meals.

Today we welcomed two groups to our Rappahannock Education Farm. In the morning, the Skylark homeschool co-op visited the Farm and helped us harvest more than 50 pounds of beautiful onions. 🧅 In the afternoon, Virginia Community Food Connections held its semi-annual meeting with local food pantries at our Farm. The meeting focused on the challenges and progress made in bringing fresh produce to those who need this most in our community. KG Love Thy Neighbor was one of the pantries at the afternoon meeting. We donated 50 pounds of onions 🧅and a few tomatoes to them for their Thursday night pantry.

Planting Flowers, 🌺 Replanting Zucchini and cucumbers, 🥒 and Blocking weeds!! This morning we accomplished a lot!! Weeks ago we started zinnias, marigolds and basil 🌿 by seed in our greenhouse. This morning we planted them. The zinnias will attract pollinators and the marigolds and basil 🌿 are good companion plants for our tomatoes. 🍅 https://homesteadandchill.com/tomato-companion-plants/?srsltid=AfmBOooYIBCqG_LQjiojyGIXTtbFdb8tTzj-_KDE2Oq0lZ0gwpwhS-vc

Our volunteers also added landscaping fabric between our watermelon 🍉 rows to reduce the need for weeding and we replanted by seed some zucchini and cucumbers in places where they were previously planted but didn’t make it. This morning we also welcomed a nice group from Unity of Fredericksburg for a tour of our nonprofit Farm.
