The following ws sent to me by a friend: On this day in 1931, “The Star-Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem of the United States. 🇺🇸

The lyrics were written more than a century earlier by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the 25-hour British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. At dawn, he saw the American flag still flying over the fort — and in that powerful moment, he penned the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry.”

The words were later set to the melody of a popular 18th-century British tune, “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The pairing caught on quickly and became a favorite at patriotic events across the young nation.

For years, other songs like “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” and “Hail Columbia” were used at official ceremonies. The U.S. Navy adopted “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 1889, and it was used for presidential occasions beginning in 1916.

But it wasn’t until March 3, 1931, that Congress passed a resolution — signed into law by Herbert Hoover — officially naming it our national anthem.

From a night of uncertainty to a symbol of endurance and hope — the song reminds us that even in the darkest hours, the flag was still there.

🇺🇸 “O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave…”

On January 18, the Frederick Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution proudly presented the DAR Community Service Award to LTJG Shannon Fleischer in recognition of her exceptional volunteer service and inspiring leadership with the Craig Bryan Wibberley Pathfinders Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets.

From her beginnings as a parent volunteer to her role as Commanding Officer, Shannon’s dedication has helped shape one of the nation’s most respected Sea Cadet units. She leads more than 60 cadets and a committed team of adult volunteers, creating opportunities that prepare young people for college, military service, and leadership—while instilling a lifelong commitment to patriotism and community service.

“Shannon’s service goes far beyond her title,” said Dorothy E. Olson, Regent of the Frederick Chapter, NSDAR. “She shows our youth that service to others and love of country are values to be lived every day.”

👏 Thank you, LTJG Fleischer, for your outstanding service to our youth, our veterans, and our community!

What an incredible afternoon celebrating the 260th Anniversary of the Repudiation of the Stamp Act!

Our chapter was proud to stand alongside Carrollton Manor Chapter, NSDAR, Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter, SAR, the City of Frederick, and the 250th Historic Consortium as we reenacted this bold moment in history.

On November 17th, the Frederick Chapter gathered for our annual meeting celebrating the Repudiation of the Stamp Act. We were honored to welcome guest speaker Mary Mannix, who shared a fascinating and well-received program on the "12 Immortals" of Frederick—a powerful reminder of the courage and convictions found in our own community’s history. You could feel the pride in the room as we celebrated our chapter’s rich Revolutionary heritage.”

Following the presentation, members enjoyed tea and a delicious luncheon. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, catch up with old friends, and share in fellowship together.

We were also proud to give the Oath of Membership to two new members of DAR, Kathryn DAO and Mary Myers.

A heartfelt thank you to Barbara Shealer and Pat Harris for planning our lovely luncheon. They put their hearts into creating a welcoming luncheon., I'm grateful to all the members who helped with setup and cleanup. Your hard work and dedication make these gatherings truly special.

A heartfelt thank you to Susan Hughes, Dyane Tower, Mary Richardson, and Connie Dickson for giving of your time to place flags on veterans' graves at Mt. Olivet. Together, we placed around 100 flags, each flag representing a life of sacrifice and service. Your efforts honor our courageous veterans who gave so much, often at the expense of time with their families, so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear.
