With profound sadness the VFW Post 10232 says farewell to Ray Kurkowski. Ray passed Sunday morning. Few people supported our post and our community with more dedication than Ray. He was Auxiliary President, a bartender, a friend, and an outstanding person.

Condolences to his family. He will be missed.

As of February 17, 2026, the VA is implementing an interim final rule amending 38 CFR 4.10, which mandates that disability ratings will now reflect the actual level of functional impairment, meaning the ameliorative effects of medication and treatment will not be discounted. This rule, effective immediately, aims to counter previous judicial interpretations.

Myths about the VFW:

Myth: Smoky bar with old grumpy vets telling war stories.

Fact: Smoke free bar open to the public and the proceeds fund our local Post and all of our local programs.

Myth: I don't drink or have time for the VFW.

Fact: Many of us do not drink. We meet once a month (second Saturday at 9am) and hold a some events throughout the year. We ask that you give the time you can, but family and work come first.

Myth: I won't have a voice or fit in.

Fact: Our Post is open to all vets that qualify for the VFW. We don't exclude for any reason.

Here is the simple truth about the VFW as a whole... our organization is in decline. What started out as a place for vets to be amongst people with shared experiences changed, but the younger generation hasn't found us, yet, or has heard negative things. The VFW adapts as time moves on.

We exist to give back to our community and help all veterans in need. The membership numbers of our organization give us a lobbying voice in State and Federal government to fight for rights and benefits of all vets.

As a Post here in Lewis, we have several Red Cross blood drives every year. We promote programs in local schools the get students thinking about patriotism, civic duty, and Americanism and give scholarships to middle and high school students here in Frederic. We are STRICTLY non-partisan in everything we do. We participate in Lewis Days, Frederic Days, Memorial day and Veterans day ceremonies, and have a partnership with the Frederic American Legion to support each other's activities. We are a member of the Frederic Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin Tavern League and donate to local charities.

We need help, though. Our members are getting older and cannot give as much as they once could. If you are a Veteran, look at the qualifications for membership on either www.vfwwi.org or www.vfw.org You can reach out to me personally at 715-338-9158 (Doug Mitchell) and I will be happy to answer any questions.
