Today is my 27 weeker’s last day of eighth grade. My 2 pound, 4.8 ounce Preemie is a fourteen year old - with a mustache, no less. 😬

Parents of Preemies often see milestones differently than parents of Termies (yeah…fake word…LOL). But rest assured, these little fighters get there eventually.

So as I prepare to be a blubbering mess at his transition ceremony tomorrow, always remember…

To my NICU baby,

I’m sorry your first days on earth were filled with wires instead of warm blankets.

I’m sorry I couldn’t just scoop you up and walk out of the hospital like I imagined.

Instead, I sat beside an incubator praying for your oxygen to stay up, your weight to go up, and for the doctors to finally say the words, “Your baby can go home.”

The NICU stole so many moments from us.
The newborn bubble.
The peaceful beginning.
The normal experience every parent hopes for.

But it also showed me how unbelievably strong you are.

You fought before you could even talk.
And somehow, in that tiny little body, you carried more strength than I thought was possible.

You will always be the baby that made me realize how fragile life is… and how powerful love can be.

❤️❤️❤️NICU Parents are the BEST❤️❤️❤️

Joelle Haley, whose son was cared for at Children’s Hospital of Michigan NICU at DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital, says she learned from a nurse how crocheted octopi can help babies grasp the tentacles of the creatures instead of the NICU tubes and wires.

So, she went to work making them and asked people in her hometown to help!
