Our first Washington Parish Balloon Festival was a wonderful success! We were grateful for the opportunity to meet so many amazing people who stopped by our booth to learn about our mission, enter our raffle, and support us through donations.

Most importantly, we were honored to share the stories of our guys and gal and raise awareness about the ongoing needs of military working dogs. In a small community like ours, events like this help spread the word not only about our organization but also about the incredible service and sacrifice these dogs make throughout their careers.

Thank you to everyone who visited, donated, asked questions, and showed their support. We are truly grateful for your encouragement and look forward to continuing our mission with the help of our community.

Congratulations to our raffle winner Steve C. Steve will get a t-shirt, hat, fleece throw, a coffee mug and tumbler.

Our hearts are hurting as we share this update on Keno.

Despite medicated baths, topical treatments, and extensive antibiotic therapy, Keno's infected hygromas have nearly doubled in size. One has now ruptured, leaving him with large, exposed wounds infected with MRSP. He is clearly uncomfortable, and due to the location of these wounds, keeping them clean, dry, and protected has become increasingly difficult.

We have consulted with our primary veterinarian, an internal medicine specialist, and a highly respected surgeon. All have agreed that continuing to manage these wounds with temporary measures is no longer in Keno's best interest. Unfortunately, because of his severely suppressed immune system and IMPA, he is not considered a surgical candidate. At this stage, Keno is essentially receiving extended palliative care.

We are not being forced to make an immediate decision today, but this heartbreaking guidance is consistent with what multiple veterinary professionals have told us since Keno first arrived in our care.

As always, we believe in being transparent with those who have followed and supported Keno's journey. We also know that updates like this can bring strong emotions and differing opinions. We simply ask for kindness and compassion in your comments as we navigate an incredibly difficult situation.

If your perspective is that we should continue pursuing every possible avenue to prolong Keno's time with us, we respectfully ask that you also consider helping shoulder the significant financial and medical burden of his ongoing care. Donations can be made through the link below.

Most importantly, we ask for your prayers, positive thoughts, and support for Keno. Right now, our focus remains on keeping him as comfortable, loved, and pain-free as possible.

As most of you know, RMWD Keno is very sick. Since his arrival 2.5 weeks ago, we’ve been reviewing his medical records, trying to understand exactly what he’s dealing with—and honestly, it’s been overwhelming and heartbreaking. His records are extensive, but they are also incomplete at best....

I am so over the rain in Louisiana. I swear it has been raining nearly everyday for the last month. My dogs are getting cabin fever, the mosquitoes have taken up permanent residency, and I need my kayak to get off my porch. Go Away!

Would hate for things to dry out! 😵‍💫

We are officially full. ❤️

Those 4 words simply amaze me. I never would have imagined within the first 6 months we would already have a wait list.

We may “only” have 9 retired heroes right now, but that’s the number I can personally fund if needed. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive amazing support from so many people, and because of that, we are growing quickly. Realistically though, we still have a long way to go before we can safely offer more spots.

We have the room — 16 acres of it — but we also need to know the financial side is secure. As support continues to grow, we’ll keep working toward more dedicated yard space, larger and more secure kennel areas for our escape artists, and better long-term infrastructure for the dogs in our care.

We aren’t a kennel. We don’t have state-of-the-art facilities, and we certainly aren’t fancy. We adjust and learn as we go. But what we are is a home that has made room for four-legged heroes to never have to worry about where they’ll end up again.

Our goal has always been to provide retired working dogs with the safe, peaceful home they deserve, and over time we hope to welcome many more.

Right now, our monthly expenses are around $3,500, and much of that is funded directly by us. Every single donation, share, purchase, and word of encouragement helps more than you know.

To everyone who continues to support us in any way — thank you. We know times are hard for everyone, which makes your kindness and generosity mean even more. It never goes unnoticed, and neither do the dogs whose lives you are helping change. ❤️

Please help us welcome MWD Aron to K9 Legacy Project! 🐾

Aron is a 6-year-old dual-certified Dutch Shepherd (“Dutchie”) joining us (very last minute - we got a call less than 24 hours ago) all the way from Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. After years of service, Aron was medically retired due to mild heart issues and several heat-related incidents.

Thankfully, retirement for Aron means cool air conditioning, plenty of love, and no more working in the heat — because honestly, have you ever been through a Louisiana summer? ☀️🥵

We’re told Aron is a super sweet boy who absolutely loves being around his people. He’s highly energetic and can occasionally be a bit of a bully, with the occasional reminder that he definitely knows how to use his training, but he is not known to be aggressive.

Now it’s Aron’s turn to relax, decompress, and enjoy the retirement he has earned. We’re honored to be part of his next chapter. ❤️

Welcome home, Aron.
