Heard County Low Birth Weight Initiative Partially funded by support from Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia Poor maternal health and nutrition may cause low birth weight.

An infant born with a weight of less than five pounds (2,500 grams) at birth is classified as a low birth weight infant. Babies with low birth weight were either born prematurely or are small for their age because their growth was restricted in the womb. Over the last decade and a half, there have been one-third fewer teen pregnancies, a lower rate of expectant mothers smoking, and more pregnant women getting prenatal care, so one might expect that the rate of LBW would be declining. Fact of the Day: 10.4 percent of births from 2002 through 2008 in Heard County were low birth weight. We had a total of 862 live births of which 90 were low birth weight.
