SURPRISE!!! We haven’t yet shared on here about our work in Kenya, but that’s part of what we’ve been up to these past few months! In East Africa, Down syndrome is seen as a disease, a curse, a demon, or the result of witchcraft. Down syndrome is rarely diagnosed, but babies with the characteristics are typically killed or hidden away. At Brushfield International, we believe that Down syndrome should not be a death sentence and that EVERY person is uniquely and purposefully created in the image of God, which is why when we heard the stories of how people with Down syndrome are treated in East Africa, we knew that we had to do something about it! In December, we partnered with the Down Syndrome Society of Kenya to host a family day for families impacted by Down syndrome in 2 Kenyan cities. In this culture, people with Down syndrome are excluded from society and typical family reunions, so having a day for just the Down syndrome community meant so much to them! We look forward to continue to build upon this partnership in order to change hearts and minds in East Africa in the future! 🇰🇪🦒

The winter often brings increased hospitalizations for our friends with Down syndrome, as all of the sicknesses floating around combined with the smaller airways of people with Down syndrome can cause more intense medical challenges. We’ve been highlighting our past projects over the last few weeks, but now it’s time to shift the attention to our current projects! As you probably know, one of our current project is sending comfort boxes to children with Down syndrome facing serious medical challenges. These included, but are not limited to, childhood cancer, heart defects, infantile spams, and more. We hope to remind these families of how seen and loved they are during an isolating time, which is why we personalize every box to that recipient! A typical comfort box includes a Brushfield International blanket, onesie or tshirt, book, sensory items, and toys. If you know a child with Down syndrome who is facing a serious medical challenge, comment “comfort” for the link to nominate them for a comfort box 💙
