SURPRISE!!! We haven’t yet shared on here about our work in Kenya, but that’s part of what we’ve been up to these past few months! In East Africa, Down syndrome is seen as a disease, a curse, a demon, or the result of witchcraft. Down syndrome is rarely diagnosed, but babies with the characteristics are typically killed or hidden away. At Brushfield International, we believe that Down syndrome should not be a death sentence and that EVERY person is uniquely and purposefully created in the image of God, which is why when we heard the stories of how people with Down syndrome are treated in East Africa, we knew that we had to do something about it! In December, we partnered with the Down Syndrome Society of Kenya to host a family day for families impacted by Down syndrome in 2 Kenyan cities. In this culture, people with Down syndrome are excluded from society and typical family reunions, so having a day for just the Down syndrome community meant so much to them! We look forward to continue to build upon this partnership in order to change hearts and minds in East Africa in the future! 🇰🇪🦒
