September is and last week, we kicked it off at Dare to Care Food Bank in Louisville. We heard from our Executive Director Melissa McDonald, Dare to Care CEO and President Vincent James, Gabriella Gallrein from Gallrein Farms, and Terina Edington, Executive Director of Child Nutrition for Jefferson County Public Schools.

According to recent Map The Meal Gap Data, 1 in 5 Kentuckians are food insecure. At Feeding Kentucky, we partner with our seven regional food banks and over 900 partner agencies to help hungry Kentuckians have food on their tables.

The cost of living being high is hurting too many Kentuckians, to the point where 70% of our Hunger Study respondents making less than $50,000 a year are having to skip meals. This is why food assistance programs like SNAP are critical for families.

“This educational shift directly builds on Senate Joint Resolution 23, sponsored by state Senator Shelley Funke Frommeyer and passed during the 2026 Regular Session.

SJR 23 officially declared Kentucky a “Food Is Medicine” state, the first statewide resolution of its kind in the United States to formally align agriculture, healthcare, and education.”

Thank you The Paducah Sun for highlighting the work one of our seven partner agency food banks, Purchase Area Development District, is doing in their area to address hunger in the region.

According to Feeding America’s newly released statistics from 2024, hunger in the state is rising. One in five Kentuckians is now experiencing food insecurity, representing more than 837,000 people.

We’re at Dare to Care Food Bank this morning to kick off Hunger Action Month. During the month of September, we will highlight the work Feeding Kentucky and our partner agencies do to address hunger in the state.

Recent Feeding America data tells us 18% of our population is food insecure, with some counties being near 30%. Thank you to all who attended our kickoff this morning!

The school year may be underway but we’re still celebrating the incredible impact of a summer spent serving our Cardinal families! ❤️🖤

Our Summer Feeding Program was truly a community effort, and we are so grateful for every staff member, volunteer, and partner who helped make it possible—especially our friends at Livingston Hospital

Strong schools are built by strong communities, and we are thankful for those who continue to show up as Champions for Cardinals each and every day.
