Yesterday Salato Wildlife Education Center hosted an official signing ceremony for SB 37, which made the Treeing Walker Coonhound Kentucky’s state dog and shelter pets the state pet, and also made the spotted skunk the official non game mammal and the hellbender the official amphibian. Unfortunately Ethan from Ethan's Rescue Pet Project , who worked so hard for the shelter pet bill, didn’t make it to the ceremony because he was helping his mom transport a Kentucky dog in need to rescue.

Here’s to a better future for all Kentucky’s animals, including Treeing Walker Coonhounds, like Eugene, Bandit, Boots & Conway, who recently found themselves in Ky animal shelters!

“End overpopulation, end many of the problems that face companion animals.”

We currently live in a society that allows, if not creates, situations like this.

Until we accelerate spay/neuter efforts, this will not only continue, but will continue to get worse.

Kentucky can do better.

Turtle Crossing Season has arrived! ⚠️🐢

Many turtle species are on the go as they move between habitats and seek out nest sites. As you encounter turtles in roadways this spring and summer, remember the following:

✅Help turtles cross the road (in the direction they seemed to be heading) if it is safe to do so
🚫Do NOT relocate turtles - removing them from their territory and natural habitat decreases their chances of survival
🚫Do NOT take turtles home as long-term or temporary pets - let them be wild!

Be on the lookout and lend a helping hand when possible!

You can also support turtles, and other vulnerable wildlife, when you join Kentucky Wild. Learn more and become a member at FW.KY.GOV/KYWILD.

We had a fantastic time tonight at the Louisville City FC game for pups at the pitch! We even had some adorable MisPits and Friends Rescue puppies join us.

We love talking to the community about how to help Kentucky animals and we loved seeing so many young people engaged and interested in volunteering!

If interested in getting involved, let us know! 💜🐾

Senior about to go into her forever home.

Found.
Broken neck.
Double trash-bagged while still alive, thrown over an embankment.
THIS is what we are up against.
When officers were pointed in her direction after screams of agony were heard, she was alive but couldn’t be saved.

Come fight this with us.
Your voice is needed.

🐾⚖️ 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 — 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 — 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗞𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗖𝗞𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗦 ⚖️🐾

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴.
We share the admiration—hounds are loyal, incredible dogs with deep roots in our Commonwealth.

But here's the hard truth:
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘁-𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆—𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱.

That makes this moment… 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁.
Because increased visibility can mean:
➡️ Increased demand
➡️ Increased breeding
➡️ More pressure on already overwhelmed shelters
➡️ More suffering for dogs—and the people trying to save them

𝗜𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.
That means real action:
✔️ Address overpopulation
✔️ Invest in spay/neuter
✔️ Support shelters and rescues
✔️ Protect clean water and healthy habitats
✔️ Prevent suffering wherever we can

𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆—𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
