Ok, weird update:

If you zoom in on the lower right corner of the photo I shared a little while ago, you’ll find this young lady.

We *THINK* she *MIGHT* be a young virgin queen that the colony already made for itself after dispatching their mother. If so, she’ll be off on her mating flight soon. In the meantime, if she doesn’t return (or if she’s not a queen, but that abdomen suggests she may be!), the frames from Amidala *could* still save this colony.

We’ll “leave them bee” for a few weeks while they sort it all out and get their new queen settled.

Fingers crossed!!

(The odds of her being in the one photo we took today are 1:40.) (Ten 2-sided frames per box times 2 boxes!)

Bugs are so cool. 😊

Well, darn. Sometimes things just don’t go according to plan.

Upon inspecting Caillou’s hive for the first time this season, we discovered they were queenless. (There were no baby bees, no capped brood, no larvae, no eggs.) We estimate she has been gone for 21-23 days. Their population is still quite strong, and they have lots of pollen, nectar, and honey, so we transferred two frames of eggs and tiny larvae from Amidala’s hive in hopes of Caillou successfully using them to raise a new queen.

It’s kind of a last-ditch effort to save that colony, and we may be too late, but it was all we could do for today.

If it doesn’t work, then we’ll do a full split of Amidala’s colony into Caillou’s hive in a few weeks. But there goes our hope for expanding this year, as well as of helping out local beekeepers whose colonies didn’t survive winter. 😢

Here’s a photo of one of the 20 frames in the Caillou hive today, early in the inspection:

We had a lovely morning at the Second Congregational Church of Attleboro’s Earth Day coffee hour. So many folks were interested in beekeeping and native plants and honey and wax, and the kids enjoyed trying on our jackets and veils (and eating honey sticks, of course!)

Many thanks to Heather Carey for the invitation, and to all the parishioners for their warm welcome and intellectual curiosity! Yay, bees!

Oh, happy day!! All the winter trappings are back in storage, and both hives are set up with their supply of spring feed until we start seeing them bringing in the “good stuff” from nature, at which point they’ll stop taking what we gave them. We’ll then swap out that top box for the first box for honey frames so they can make that gorgeous, light spring honey you all love so much.

Maybe most exciting of all is that we’re planning an expansion this season, if all goes well!!

We’re so happy that both colonies made it through winter again. Smart little bugs!! 💙🐝

Got to go in to say hello to these gorgeous girls from Amidala’s hive today! These industrious ladies are already beginning to bring in early pollen! We’re always excited to see them after as long and cold a winter as we had this year.

CAILLOU LIVES!!!!

Since it’s pretty warm today, I figured I could take a quick peek to see how the girls are doing and to check their food reserves…… to be perfectly honest, I opened up Caillou first, fully prepared to find a cold, empty hive with a pile of desiccated corpses at the bottom. The idea was that I could take their food tray and pop it into the Amidala hive (which is obviously doing well from external observation), but when I lifted the insulation panel, I was greeted by several thousand eyes hungrily peering at me through the holes in their food stores!!!

So they got buttoned right back up, and I scuttled back into the kitchen to make some more patties (for both hives) to help them get through til the dandelions bloom. 😊

PSA: please consider not using herbicides on your lawns. Dandelions are a fantastic early food source for the girls and a big reason for why y’all love that spring honey so much!!! 😊 💙 🐝

New Product Announcement Coming Soon!!

(These bright colors are reminding us that spring, flowers, bees, and yes, honey are just around the corner!!)

Drop your guesses below! 😃

Very happy to report that, in spite of the frigid temps early on this winter, loads of bees briefly left the Amidala hive during the warm spell this afternoon to take cleansing flights. It’s so encouraging to know they are surviving the winter …. so far!!

(Did you know honeybees won’t 💩 inside the hive? Just one more fascinating fact about these awesome buggies.)
