Fun little Fort Worth history fact!

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: The first washateria in history was in this Fort Worth building, located at 1342–44 North Main Street. It opened on April 18, 1934, with four electric washing machines that customers rented by the hour. The name was apparently coined from “wash” + “cafeteria,” emphasizing the serve-yourself idea. Strangely, the sources that I can find disagree about who opened it. Some identify C. A. Tannahill, while others, including a 1989 Los Angeles Times article citing Famous First Facts, identify J. F. (John F.) Cantrell. The building had previously housed a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Incidentally, Piggly Wiggly itself was revolutionary: founded in 1916, it is recognized as the first true self-service grocery store, revolutionizing the grocery shopping experience by allowing customers to select their own items.

🎒 Happy first day of school Fort Worth ISD students and teachers!

So, here's a history lesson: ✏️
The first high school in Fort Worth was located at Hemphill Street and West Daggett Avenue south of downtown, the campus opened in 1891. Designed by Haggart & Sanguinet, the three-story, red-brick structure merged Romanesque and Renaissance styles and was regarded as one of the finest school buildings in Texas.

Sadly, Fort Worth High School was destroyed by fire in December 1909, and students were shuffled to nearby elementary schools until Central High School was built in 1911.

The Justin Boot Co. factory sits on the former Fort Worth High School site today.
