Dr. Jane Goodall narrating an E.E. Cummings poem, animated. A father-son Take Your Kid to Work Day — except Dad is the Grim Reaper. The story of the man who made Austin weird. New parents in 1991, the World Series on in the background, saying things they can’t take back.
Shorts Block 7. Sunday, November 8 at 3:15 PM at The Modern. Reserve your seat at lonestarfilmfestival.com.

Till Death Does His Part follows a father and son on a more unconventional Take Your Kid to Work Day as Dad Death attempts to proudly show off his “work” in killing an elderly patient to a more horrified Kid Death.

Conflict ensues as Kid Death doesn’t want to kill and instead takes it into his own hands to keep the patient alive against his father’s wishes. They go back and forth, killing and reviving the poor man over and over until Dad takes it a little too far and accidentally swings his scythe and strikes Kid down. Now, Dad Death must go against his job and learn to bring life back rather than take it. Ultimately, Dad succeeds, and Kid Death is revived. Reluctantly, Dad gives in and lets his son keep the patient alive a little longer.

The Trips of Jim Franklin tells the story of Jim Franklin - the iconic concert poster artist who helped establish the Austin music venue, Armadillo World Headquarters, and is credited with making Austin “weird.” At the intersection of psychedelic art, outlaw country, and rebellion, Jim Franklin is an artist whose larger-than-life personality helped define 1970s Austin counter-culture. As the emcee of the Armadillo World Headquarters, Franklin’s on-stage persona became as unforgettable as the acts he introduced, from Willie Nelson to Bruce Springsteen… But it was his armadillo-centered art that became the ultimate symbol of Austin’s artistic revolution. Blending new interviews, archival footage, and animation, this documentary captures the spirit of a visionary artist and his lasting legacy.

Worshippers on opposite sides of a border wall, singing through rusted steel bars. A drunk man at a campfire who really shouldn’t have started whistling. A violinist clearing out a family estate who begins seeing things she can’t explain. A young girl at a winter scout retreat who walks in one person and leaves another.
Shorts Block 6 doesn’t look away from anything.

When heading to the oceanside, one might expect to see surfers, joggers, and sunbathers—but not this. Each Sunday, a quiet yet powerful ritual unfolds as worshippers in Tijuana and San Diego gather on opposite sides of the border wall. Through song, prayer, and fellowship shared across rusty steel bars, an unexpected act of unity, faith, and resistance comes to life.

On what begins as a quiet night at home, four friends are confronted with the news of a devastating act of anti-trans violence. In an instant, their sense of safety is shattered. As shock gives way to grief—and grief to rage—their quiet evening fractures into a shared, unspoken question: what does justice look like when the world refuses to provide it?

Out at a campfire late at night, a man drunkenly stumbles to the edge of the woods to relieve himself. As he does, he starts to absentmindedly whistle. Something in the woods whistles back.
