Fort Worth artist Melanie Summers brought creativity and loads of personality to the August meeting of CreativeMornings/Fort Worth, where she shared her story through this monthâs theme: the resilience of the palm tree.
Summers was diagnosed with Stargardtâs disease just two weeks before graduating high school, a condition that left her with gaps in her vision. She also told the story of an elementary school teacher who made a lasting impression by encouraging her to do more. Years later, that same teacher would become part of the story of her creative career.
After many years working in radio and marketing, Summers eventually found her way to art. Her business began with a stain on her daughterâs clothing, which led her to tie-dye and, eventually, to the unpredictable process of ice dyeing. Her first sale went to the son of that elementary school teacher. From there came pop-up events, a gallery show and, ultimately, recognition as an Emerging Artist at the 2025 Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival.
âEvery time I wanted to quit, there were little nudges that kept me going,â she said.
Today, Summers creates one-of-a-kind pieces on canvas and fabric through her Fort Worth-based studio, Blind Eyed Designs.
For Summers, resilience is a vital part of her story. âItâs not so much about surviving the storms. Itâs about what happened because of the storm,â she said. âThose challenges make us who we are.â
True to Summersâ unapologetic creative spirit, her work comes with a tagline that says it all: âMade with Love and Profanity.â
