Honoring the Stars and Stripes – Our Enduring Symbol of Freedom

This June 14, as we celebrate Flag Day, we pause to honor one of America’s most powerful and unifying symbols: the Stars and Stripes.

Less than a year after the Declaration of Independence, with the Revolutionary War raging, the Continental Congress took a bold step to give the new nation a flag of its own. On June 14, 1777, they passed the first Flag Resolution:

Resolved, That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

This wasn’t just fabric and thread—it was a declaration of unity and independence. The stripes honored the colonies that dared to challenge tyranny. The stars in that blue field symbolized a fresh beginning.

It’s been revised 27 times throughout America's history, growing with our nation while staying rooted in its founding principles. Today’s flag – with its 50 stars and enduring 13 stripes – is the longest-running version since 1959.

This Flag Day, whether you’re flying Old Glory in your yard, attending a parade, or simply reflecting on its meaning, remember what it represents: courage in the face of adversity, unity amid struggles, and the unyielding pursuit of freedom.

Two hundred and fifty-one years ago this week, on April 19, 1775, the first shots of the American Revolution were fired on the village green in Lexington, Massachusetts.

These were not professional soldiers but farmers, tradesmen, and fathers—many of them devout Christians—who believed they were effecting “the work of the Lord” against tyranny. In 1778, Rev. Jacob Cushing preached in Lexington on the anniversary: “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side… then they had swallowed us up quick.” He reminded the people that their deliverance came not just from their courage but also from the merciful hand of God, who “rules in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth.”

Today, we enjoy freedoms paid for with the blood of that generation. As John Adams later warned, “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make a good use of it.”
