Fort Plain Area Hometown Heroes Banner Program Information on Hometown Heroes Banners

We went out today and did some repairs and re-installing of banners that were damaged by contact or wind over the Winter. However, there are some missing and we are hoping that they turn up as people get outside and start working on their lawns/yards as has happened in the past. We ask that if you come across one, you bring it to the VFW Post, the FP Village Office, or the FP DPW so they can be re-installed. Thank you!

Today we installed the last of our banners. We started this endeavor in May of 2023 throughout the Villages of Fort Plain and Nelliston with the cooperation of both Village Boards, and guidance from Julie Rider Erno and members of the Morris J. Edwards American Legion in St. Johnsville, who were in the process of their own very successful Banner Program. Bill Farber at the VFW Post in Fort Plain dedicated immeasurable hours to processing applications, scanning photos, collecting payments, and communicating with the production companies and banner sponsors. Without him stepping up and saying, "Let's do it" when presented with the idea, none of it would have happened. Our installation crew of Kyle Calhoun, Mayor Pat Hanifin and myself treated every trip out with the bucket truck as an absolute labor of love and respect to our Veterans. We'd be remiss if we didn't thank Veterans Steven DeVost and Patrick Mereness, who also volunteered with us to proudly honor their Military brothers and sisters, and George Capece and his DPW crew for guiding us with assistance on the first installation back in 2023. And to Jim and James who owned/own the company and did the graphic design work for the banners; it was a pleasure working with them. Lastly, but most importantly, thank you to all Veterans and their families for willing to sacrifice for all of us. 🇺🇸

And that's a wrap! The Fort Plain Banner Program has officially come to a close. We are waiting for our last shipment of a few banners to come in, to be hung before Winter. No more applications will be accepted. Thank you for your support of this wonderful program and for allowing Fort Plain, Nelliston, and the immediate surrounding area to celebrate the service of so many of our servicemen and women.

And just like that, we had nice weather this morning and were able to get out to hang all of the banners we've received, including these- grandparents and their grandson at the end of Canal Street. Thanks to Kyle for volunteering his time this morning and to everyone for their continued support.

We just wanted to give a quick update on banner installations. As you know, we've had rain (or wind) almost every Saturday, which has made it impossible to get out and hang banners. We did try a couple of times and had to quit early due to either rain or wind. We had planned to get out today with the forecast of "passing showers", but obviously it is pouring rain out there. Thank you for your patience, as we are a very small crew that is limited to Saturdays and some Sundays due to work schedules. We'll try again soon!
