Rudy is a great cat! Male, 4 years old lap cat, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. It seems he prefers to be the only cat. He was thrown off a boat in the Fort Myers Beach back bay. He swam to safety. SOS found him hungry, thirsty and looking for someone to rake care of him. He's going to be a great companion for some lucky person. Text for fast response 239-851-3485 or call.

π—Ÿπ—˜π—§β€™π—¦ π—§π—”π—Ÿπ—ž 𝗔𝗕𝗒𝗨𝗧 π—₯π—˜π—Ÿπ—’π—–π—”π—§π—œπ—’π—‘

When you ask Fortunate Ferals about relocating a community cat, you’ll almost always hear us say the same thing:

π—₯π—˜π—Ÿπ—’π—–π—”π—§π—œπ—’π—‘ π—œπ—¦ 𝗔 π—Ÿπ—”π—¦π—§ π—₯π—˜π—¦π—’π—₯𝗧.

And here’s why.

Cats are territorial.
You can’t simply pick a cat up, take them somewhere completely unfamiliar, put them down, and expect them to understand, β€œOkay, this is where I live now.”

They don’t know the area.
They don’t know where the food sources are. They don’t know where the safe hiding spots are.
They don’t know what predators are around or what dangers to avoid.

And something I think a lot of people don’t realize is just how π—₯π—’π—¨π—§π—œπ—‘π—˜-π—•π—”π—¦π—˜π—— 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗔π—₯π—˜.

If you’ve ever actually watched a cat for an entire day,(I don’t necessarily recommend it because, A, you’ll probably sweat to death in the Florida heat and, B, it’s honestly going to be pretty boring.)

But you’ll notice something.

They make their rounds.

They know that around a certain time, food comes out at one house. They know another food source is available somewhere else at another time. They know where they like to sleep. They know where they feel safe. They know the territory they live in. They know the scary dog down the street to stay away from.

π—§π—›π—˜π—œπ—₯ π—₯π—’π—¨π—§π—œπ—‘π—˜ π—œπ—¦ π—§π—›π—˜π—œπ—₯ π—¦π—˜π—–π—¨π—₯π—œπ—§π—¬.

When you suddenly remove them from everything they know, you’re putting them into an environment where they have to figure everything out from scratch.

And that can be incredibly dangerous.

Now, does that mean relocation should NEVER happen?

𝗑𝗼.

There are absolutely situations where relocation may be necessary.

For example, if a colony is located in an extremely dangerous area where cats are consistently being hit by vehicles, or their territory is being completely destroyed, relocation may be considered.

But there is a HUGE difference between:

𝗔𝗑𝗗 𝗔π—₯π—˜π—” π—ͺπ—›π—˜π—₯π—˜ π—§π—›π—˜π—¦π—˜ 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗔π—₯π—˜ π—œπ—‘ π—šπ—˜π—‘π—¨π—œπ—‘π—˜ π——π—”π—‘π—šπ—˜π—₯.

and

𝗔𝗑𝗗 𝗔 π—£π—˜π—₯𝗦𝗒𝗑 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 π——π—’π—˜π—¦π—‘β€™π—§ π—ͺ𝗔𝗑𝗧 π—§π—›π—˜π—  π—§π—›π—˜π—₯π—˜.

A person being uncomfortable with community cats, not liking them being around, or not wanting to see them in their neighborhood is 𝗑𝗒𝗧 π—”π—¨π—§π—’π— π—”π—§π—œπ—–π—”π—Ÿπ—Ÿπ—¬ 𝗔 π—₯π—˜π—”π—¦π—’π—‘ 𝗧𝗒 π—₯π—˜π—Ÿπ—’π—–π—”π—§π—˜ π—§π—›π—˜π— .

Often, that’s a reason to look at π—–π—’π—Ÿπ—’π—‘π—¬ π— π—”π—‘π—”π—šπ—˜π— π—˜π—‘π—§.

And this is where TNR comes in.

A huge portion of the complaints people have about community cats are connected to the fact that the cats aren’t sterilized.

The howling.

The fighting.

The roaming.

The spraying.

The constant mating behavior.

The endless kittens.

Once cats are spayed or neutered, those reproductive behaviors can decrease significantly.

The colony can become much more stable and manageable. And feeding matters too.

If cats have a consistent food source, they are much less likely to rely on digging through trash or wandering around looking for their next meal.

π—œπ—™ 𝗬𝗒𝗨 𝗖𝗔𝗑’𝗧 π—•π—˜π—”π—§ π—§π—›π—˜π— , π—π—’π—œπ—‘ π—§π—›π—˜π— .

Set a consistent feeding time.
Provide food responsibly.
Keep the area clean.
Get the cats sterilized.

You may be surprised by just how much the situation changes.

There is SO much more we could talk about when it comes to relocation, including what 𝗣π—₯π—’π—£π—˜π—₯ π—₯π—˜π—Ÿπ—’π—–π—”π—§π—œπ—’π—‘ π—”π—–π—§π—¨π—”π—Ÿπ—Ÿπ—¬ π—Ÿπ—’π—’π—žπ—¦ π—Ÿπ—œπ—žπ—˜ when it truly is necessary.

But for today, here’s the biggest takeaway:

𝗗𝗒 𝗑𝗒𝗧 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 π—£π—œπ—–π—ž 𝗨𝗣 𝗔 π—–π—’π— π— π—¨π—‘π—œπ—§π—¬ 𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗑𝗗 𝗗π—₯𝗒𝗣 π—§π—›π—˜π—  π—¦π—’π— π—˜π—ͺπ—›π—˜π—₯π—˜ π—˜π—Ÿπ—¦π—˜.

Proper relocation requires a plan, preparation, and acclimation.

Whether you’re an individual or an organization, π—‘π—˜π—©π—˜π—₯ π—₯π—˜π—Ÿπ—’π—–π—”π—§π—˜ 𝗔 𝗖𝗔𝗧 π—ͺπ—œπ—§π—›π—’π—¨π—§ π—žπ—‘π—’π—ͺπ—œπ—‘π—š π—˜π—«π—”π—–π—§π—Ÿπ—¬ π—ͺ𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗒𝗨’π—₯π—˜ π——π—’π—œπ—‘π—š 𝗔𝗑𝗗 π—›π—”π—©π—œπ—‘π—š 𝗔 π—£π—Ÿπ—”π—‘ π—œπ—‘ π—£π—Ÿπ—”π—–π—˜ π—™π—œπ—₯𝗦𝗧.

At Fortunate Ferals, relocation should and always will be a π—Ÿπ—”π—¦π—§ π—₯π—˜π—¦π—’π—₯𝗧.

Because sometimes the best thing we can do for a community cat isn’t move them.

π—œπ—§β€™π—¦ π— π—”π—žπ—˜ π—§π—›π—˜ π—£π—Ÿπ—”π—–π—˜ π—§π—›π—˜π—¬ π—”π—Ÿπ—₯π—˜π—”π——π—¬ π—–π—”π—Ÿπ—Ÿ π—›π—’π— π—˜ π—¦π—”π—™π—˜π—₯ 𝗔𝗑𝗗 𝗠𝗒π—₯π—˜ π— π—”π—‘π—”π—šπ—˜π—”π—•π—Ÿπ—˜ 𝗙𝗒π—₯ π—§π—›π—˜ 𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗑𝗦 π—œπ—‘π—©π—’π—Ÿπ—©π—˜π——.
